GLOSSARY

What is mov?

Apple's QuickTime container - the default export from iPhone camera rolls and Final Cut Pro.

MOV is structurally close to MP4 - MP4 was derived from the same QuickTime format - and in the common case an iPhone MOV holds exactly the same H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio an MP4 would. That's why converting MOV to MP4 is often just a container change with no re-encoding involved.

Most major platforms accept MOV directly today, though a few (see the per-platform format pages below) either don't document it or restrict it to certain upload surfaces.

Koldflux picks the right codec, container and bitrate for every platform automatically - this glossary exists because our own team had to get it right first.
