Thumbnail guide
How to make a YouTube thumbnail that still reads when it is tiny

Short answer
Draw a 16:9 image (YouTube recommends 3840 x 2160 pixels, JPG or PNG, under 2 MB from the mobile app or 50 MB from a computer), put two big high-contrast words and one clear subject on it, keep the bottom-right corner free for the duration badge, then shrink it to phone size and check you can still read it. Upload it in YouTube Studio under Content, the video, Thumbnail. In our test, text 30 pixels tall on a pale sky vanished at every size, while two 190 pixel words stayed readable at 168 pixels wide.
Key takeaways
- Official numbers (YouTube Help, read October 24, 2026): recommended 3840 x 2160 for videos, minimum width 640, JPG or PNG, 16:9, mobile upload limit 2 MB, computer limit 50 MB.
- The small-size check is the step most guides skip. We shrank our sample to 360 x 202 and 168 x 94 pixels. The version with 30 pixel pale text lost its title at 1280 wide already; the version with two 190 pixel words was still readable at 168 wide (Tesseract OCR and contrast math, our test).
- Koldflux does not design thumbnails. The free thumbnail tool measures your image, checks it against YouTube's dated limits (PASS, FAIL, or a stated reason it cannot decide) and scales it to 3840 x 2160. Design it in any editor, then check it here.
- Layout rules here (margin, two words, keep-clear corner) are our suggestion from one sample, not a YouTube rule.
How do I make a YouTube thumbnail step by step?
Any editor that can export a 16:9 JPG or PNG works. The steps below are app-agnostic, and the worked example is a fictional rainy bike ride vlog we drew in code (no people, no stock photos).
- Pick the one promise of the video in two words or fewer. Our sample: RAIN RIDE.
- Create a canvas at 16:9. Use the largest size your editor handles, up to 3840 x 2160 (YouTube recommendation). Our sample file is 1280 x 720 so the numbers in the tests are easy to follow.
- Place one subject big, with a plain background behind it. We used a single bike shape in yellow on dark blue.
- Add the words at a size you would call too big. Give them an outline or a dark box so they do not depend on the background. Ours are 190 pixels tall on a 720 pixel canvas.
- Keep text and faces inside a margin, and leave the bottom-right corner empty, where YouTube draws the duration badge on video thumbnails in lists (we found no official badge dimensions, so this is our suggestion).
- Shrink the image to phone size and look at it. If you cannot read the words at about 168 pixels wide, enlarge them or cut words.
- Export JPG or PNG under the limit for your upload device, then upload it: YouTube Studio, Content, open the video, Thumbnail, Upload file, Save (YouTube Help). YouTube says custom thumbnails need a verified account.

What size and file limits does a YouTube thumbnail have?
These are the numbers from YouTube Help, read on October 24, 2026. Limits differ by upload device, and the recommended size is a recommendation, not an acceptance test.

Official: YouTube Help, Add custom thumbnails on YouTube, read October 24, 2026.
Two things the help page also says. A vertical video with a 16:9 custom thumbnail is replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages, while the custom one still shows on the watch feed, watch history and non-mobile platforms. And each channel has a daily limit on custom thumbnail uploads (the error reads "Daily custom thumbnail limit reached", try again in 24 hours), which varies by country or channel history.
Thumbnails must follow the Community Guidelines. YouTube lists nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence and harmful or dangerous content as reasons for rejection or a strike, and repeat offenses can remove custom thumbnail privileges for 30 days.
On a Short, the custom thumbnail is uploaded from YouTube Studio on a computer (Content, Shorts, the Short, Thumbnail, Upload file). Our separate pages cover the Shorts details and what happens when it will not change.
What goes where on a thumbnail?
This is our layout suggestion, drawn on the same sample. YouTube publishes no safe-zone map for thumbnails, so the margin and the badge box below are our approximation, not official dimensions.
- Words go top-left or left in our sample because the badge covers the bottom-right. A face, if you use one, can sit opposite the words.
- Three or four words is a ceiling for us, two is better. The title of the video already carries the rest.
- One subject. Two competing shapes at the same size make the thumbnail look busy once it is small.
- Match the promise: our weak sample shows sun for a rain video. Pictures that contradict the title read as a mistake.

Will my thumbnail still be readable at small sizes?
Check it before you upload. YouTube does not publish exact display sizes (the Data API documentation says thumbnail sizes vary by resource and video), so we used 360 x 202 as a stand-in for a phone feed card and 168 x 94 for a small suggested-video tile. These two sizes are our choice, not YouTube numbers. We shrank both samples with ffmpeg 6.1.1 (Lanczos) and ran Tesseract 5.3.4 OCR on each, upscaled 4x so the engine had a fair chance.
| Check | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Main text height (font size, on the 720 px canvas) | 30 px | 190 px |
| Same text at 360 px wide / 168 px wide | 8.4 px / 3.9 px | 53.4 px / 24.9 px |
| Main text contrast against its background | 1.09 to 1 (pale text on pale sky) | 9.3 to 1 or more (white and yellow, plus a dark outline) |
| OCR finds the title at 1280 x 720 | No (only the small footer lines) | Yes, plus noise from the raindrops |
| OCR finds the title at 360 x 202 | No | Yes: RAIN RIDE (the E gap added a stray space) |
| OCR finds any text at 168 x 94 | No text at all | Yes: RAIN RIDE |
Our measurement, October 24, 2026 (Tesseract 5.3.4 words found, WCAG 2 contrast from the colors we used; one sample pair, not a general rule).
Reading it: the before sample failed on contrast first (1.09 to 1 is almost no difference) and on size second. The two-word version passed at every size we tried. OCR is a proxy for a human glance, not a human, and one pair of images proves nothing general, so keep the habit and not our exact numbers: shrink, squint, then decide.
A simple manual version: open your export at 25% zoom, or send it to your phone and hold it at arm length. If the idea is not clear in a second, the thumbnail is too complicated.

How do I make a vlog thumbnail?
A vlog has no single obvious subject, so choose one moment, not the whole day. Pick the frame with the clearest expression or the most surprising object, crop tight, and promise one thing in two words. The weak sample above does the opposite: it lists rain, wind, snacks and a surprise ending in a 30 pixel line.
Practical order for a vlog: export three candidate frames from your editor, pick one, drop the day number and the channel name into the title instead of the image, and test two versions with YouTube itself. YouTube Studio has A/B testing: on an existing video, open Title or Thumbnail, click A/B Testing, choose Thumbnail only, upload up to 3 thumbnails, then Done. YouTube says a test should complete within two weeks, and changing the title or thumbnail during a test stops it (YouTube Help, A/B test titles & thumbnails, read October 24, 2026).
Faces are your own call. We used none, because we only ship images we made ourselves, and the sample works with a shape.
Which thumbnail maker or designer tool should I use?
It depends on whether you need to design or only to check. Koldflux is a checker and resizer, not a designer, so it does not replace the tools below. Here is the honest split.
| Tool | What it does for a thumbnail | What we verified |
|---|---|---|
| Koldflux thumbnail tool (free) | Measures width, height, bytes and format locally, then crops or pads to 3840 x 2160 and rechecks. It does not draw or add text. | We ran it three times on the live site (next section). |
| YouTube Studio, Ask Studio | Generates thumbnail suggestions from your video transcript and themes; you can ask for follow-ups such as larger text. Reached from Upload file or Get suggestions in the thumbnail area. | Official help text only (YouTube Help, October 24, 2026). We did not run it. |
| Canva | A browser design app with YouTube thumbnail templates. A good fit when you want drag and drop layout. | Not verified. Its page returned HTTP 403 to our fetches on October 24, 2026, so we state no features or prices. Check canva.com yourself. |
| Adobe Express | Another browser design app with thumbnail templates. | Not verified. Access denied (403) to our fetches on October 24, 2026. |
| Any photo or vector editor | Full control of layers and export. This page used code for the samples. | Our samples were drawn with SVG in headless Chromium. |
Read October 24, 2026; what we verified is stated in each row.
A template does not fix contrast or size. Whatever you design in, run the small-size check from the section above before you upload.
What does the Koldflux thumbnail tool really do?
It runs in your browser: you choose a PNG or JPEG (up to 20 MiB and 4 megapixels, as stated on the tool page), pick your upload device, press Check input image, then optionally crop or pad to the recommended canvas and recheck the output. We ran it on the live site on October 24, 2026 with our sample and a square test image.
| Sample (1280 x 720 PNG) | Size | Minimum width | Byte limit (2 MB mobile) | Format | 3840 x 2160 canvas |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Our after sample | 93,531 B | PASS | PASS | PASS | Advisory: differs from recommendation |
| Our before sample | 62,474 B | PASS | PASS | PASS | Advisory: differs from recommendation |
What this shows (our measurement, October 26, 2026; Playwright in headless Chromium, device set to Mobile, on a local build of the updated tool). The tool now passes or fails the image against the YouTube limits: minimum width, byte limit and format all PASS for both samples, and the 3840 x 2160 canvas is only an advisory, because it is a recommendation, not a requirement. On October 24 the live tool returned UNKNOWN for every limit because its source review was overdue; the review was redone on October 25 against YouTube Help. The account check stays UNKNOWN by design: a browser cannot verify what YouTube accepts for your channel. When we applied the result on October 24, the tool scaled our 1280 x 720 sample to a 3840 x 2160 PNG of 1,337,643 bytes.
Two cautions from our runs. The output is always PNG, which grows quickly for photos: our flat-color art stayed under the 2 MB mobile limit, but a photo may not, so convert a large result to JPG in your editor before a mobile upload. And scaling a small image up to 3840 x 2160 adds pixels, not detail; start from a large canvas when you can.
For the file size step, the Koldflux image compressor can bring a file to a target size.

Limits and how we checked
Official numbers come from one YouTube Help page and one YouTube Help A/B testing page, both read on October 24, 2026 (the first is server-rendered HTML; our headless Chromium on the VPS received a bot check page from Google, so we read the HTML from a normal request instead). The samples, OCR and contrast numbers are our measurement on one pair of images we drew. The layout suggestions are ours. We did not test the YouTube upload itself, the Studio screens, Ask Studio, Canva or Adobe Express. Help pages change, so check the source before relying on a limit. This is general information, not a guarantee that YouTube will accept or promote any thumbnail.

Questions people ask
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube recommends 3840 x 2160 pixels for videos (2160 x 3840 for Shorts), with a minimum width of 640 pixels for videos, in an aspect ratio of 16:9 (YouTube Help, read October 24, 2026).
What file types and file size can I upload?
Image formats such as JPG or PNG. Limits depend on the device: 2 MB for video thumbnails from mobile, 50 MB from a computer (YouTube Help, October 24, 2026).
Can I make a thumbnail in Canva?
Yes, Canva is a design app people use for this, but we could not read its page on October 24, 2026 (HTTP 403), so we do not state its features or pricing. Whatever you use, export 16:9 and check it at small sizes.
How big should the text be?
There is no official number. In our one sample pair, 30 pixel pale text on a 720 pixel canvas was lost at every size and two 190 pixel words stayed readable at 168 pixels wide. Treat that as our suggestion and test your own image.
Can YouTube make a thumbnail for me?
YouTube Studio has Ask Studio, which suggests thumbnails from your video transcript and themes (YouTube Help, October 24, 2026). We did not test it.
How do I test two thumbnails?
In YouTube Studio open the video, click A/B Testing under Title or Thumbnail, choose Thumbnail only and upload up to 3 thumbnails. A test should finish within two weeks, and changing the title or thumbnail mid-test stops it (YouTube Help).
