Caption character limits by platform

Updated 4 sources

Short answer

The maximum number of characters a platform allows in a post's caption - it varies enormously, from 280 on X to over 60,000 on Facebook.

Key takeaways

  • A caption limit is the maximum number of characters a platform allows in a post's caption or description.
  • Spaces, line breaks, hashtags, mentions and emoji all count.
  • On X, emoji count as 2 and every link as 23.
  • Instagram allows up to 5 hashtags on a post.
  • Only the first line or two show before "more", so lead with the hook.

Caption limit explained

Caption limits are a per-platform constant that has nothing to do with video or image specs, which is why cross-posting the same caption everywhere often means truncation on the stricter platforms (X at 280 characters, Pinterest descriptions at 800) and unused headroom on the generous ones.

A few platforms also have a separate, shorter title field in addition to the caption/description - YouTube Shorts and Pinterest both do - which is easy to overlook when adapting a caption written for a platform that only has one text field.

What counts toward a caption limit

  • Every letter, number, space and line break.
  • Hashtags and @mentions, including the # and @.
  • Emoji: often more than one character. On X, each emoji counts as 2.
  • Links: on X every URL counts as 23 characters, however long it is, because X shortens it.
  • Characters from Chinese, Japanese and Korean count as 2 on X.

Other platforms do not publish their counting rules in this detail, so leave a margin below the limit when a caption is full of emoji.

Hashtag limits

Instagram's Help Center now allows up to 5 hashtags on a post; many guides still repeat the old figure of 30. Hashtags also count toward the caption's character limit on every platform, so a caption with long tags reaches the limit sooner.

Writing captions that work inside the limit

  • Front-load the point: apps show only the first line or two before "more", so the hook must be there.
  • Treat the limit as a ceiling, not a target; most captions work best far shorter.
  • Put hashtags at the end so they do not crowd the first line.
  • Spell out links in the caption only where they are clickable; on Instagram they are not.
  • Check the count before posting, including emoji and line breaks.

Frequently asked questions

What is a caption limit?

The maximum number of characters a platform accepts in a post’s caption or description. Text beyond it is rejected or cut off, and most apps show only the first line or two before "more".

Do emojis and spaces count?

Yes. Spaces, line breaks, hashtags and emojis all count, and some emojis count as two characters because of how they are encoded.

How long should a caption be?

Only as long as it needs to be: the limit is a ceiling, not a target. Put the hook in the first line, because that is all most viewers see before tapping "more".

What happens if a caption is over the limit?

Most apps stop you typing or refuse to post; scheduling tools may cut the text off. Nothing is shortened intelligently, so trim it yourself.

Do line breaks count as characters?

Yes. Each line break counts as at least one character.
