Convert WebP to JPEG
Short answer
Drop your WebP file into the converter below and download the JPEG file. It runs in your browser with the Canvas API; nothing is uploaded. The file is re-encoded to A JPEG at 92% quality; transparent areas become white.
JPEG and JPG are the same format; this is the same conversion as WebP to JPG. · Lossy re-encode · Browser-side via Canvas - nothing uploaded.
Key takeaways
- The JPEG is bigger than the WebP: 2.33 MB became 3.71 MB for a photo (1.6 times), and every test file grew.
- It is a second lossy step. At the fixed quality of 0.92 our results scored SSIM 0.969 to 0.996 against the WebP.
- Transparent areas turn white: 22.6% of the Apollo 11 insignia WebP was fully transparent.
- Use it when a site, form or app will not take WebP. Otherwise keep the WebP.
JPEG or JPG: is there a difference?
No. They are the same format with two spellings. This page saves the file with the .jpg extension; rename it if a form insists on .jpeg.
Measured: WebP to JPG
Measured in headless Chromium with the converter's own steps: the image is drawn on a canvas, JPEG gets a white background, and the browser saves it at quality 0.92. SSIM compares the result with the browser's own decode of the input, flattened on white (1.0 would be identical). Test files: three public domain NASA scans (a 3840 × 3877 photo, a 2122 × 2644 portrait, a 3827 × 1588 handwritten document), the NASA Apollo 11 insignia as a 5380 × 5432 PNG with transparency, and a 1440 × 1000 screenshot of a page of this site. The PNG files for the photos were made losslessly from the JPEGs; the WebP files were made with libwebp at quality 85. Other browsers use their own encoders, so sizes can differ.
| Test file | Pixels | WebP | JPG | Change | SSIM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Photo (WebP) | 3840 × 3877 | 2.33 MB | 3.71 MB | +59.3% | 0.981 |
| Graphic with transparency (WebP) | 5380 × 5432 | 1.98 MB | 3.65 MB | +84.4% | 0.969 |
| Screenshot of text (WebP) | 1440 × 1000 | 57.7 KB | 127 KB | +119.5% | 0.996 |
| Document scan (WebP) | 3827 × 1588 | 558 KB | 1.08 MB | +94.0% | 0.986 |
Every JPG was bigger than the WebP it came from: 1.6 to 2.2 times the size. WebP compresses better than JPEG at similar quality, so going back costs space and, because JPEG is lossy too, a little more quality.
What happens to transparent areas
JPG has no transparency, so the converter fills the background with white. In the insignia WebP, 22.6% of the pixels were fully transparent and 0.1% partly transparent. If you need the transparency, convert to PNG instead.

WebP vs JPEG
| WebP | JPEG | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | WebP (Google) | JPEG image (.jpeg) |
| What is inside | Lossy or lossless compressed pixels | Lossy compressed pixels |
| Compression | Lossy or lossless | Lossy |
| Transparency | Transparency supported | No transparency |
| Best for | Smaller images on websites; social platforms mostly document JPEG and PNG instead | Photos; .jpeg and .jpg are the same format |
What you get
A JPEG at 92% quality; transparent areas become white. JPEG and JPG are the same format; this is the same conversion as WebP to JPG.
When this conversion makes sense
- A website, form or older app rejects WebP.
- You are sending the picture to someone whose software cannot open WebP.
- The destination asks for JPG explicitly.

Why the size depends on your WebP
The growth above is for WebP files saved at quality 85 with libwebp. A WebP saved at a lower quality is smaller still, so the JPG would grow by more; a lossless WebP would be far larger than any JPG. We did not measure those cases, so treat the ratios as one example, not a rule.
| Test file | WebP | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Photo (WebP) | 1.3 bits | 2.0 bits |
| Graphic with transparency (WebP) | 0.5 bits | 1.0 bits |
| Screenshot of text (WebP) | 0.3 bits | 0.7 bits |
| Document scan (WebP) | 0.7 bits | 1.4 bits |
When to keep the WebP
MDN's image guide lists WebP as supported in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari, and says it offers much better compression than PNG or JPEG. For the web, the WebP is the smaller choice: our screenshot WebP was 57.7 KB and the JPG 127 KB.
Questions people ask
Is this WebP to JPEG converter free and private?
Yes. It is free, needs no account and runs entirely in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
Will converting WebP to JPEG reduce quality?
A little, because JPEG is lossy and the file is re-encoded. For uploads, the platform re-encodes again anyway.
What happens to transparent areas?
JPEG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with white. Convert to PNG or WebP to keep them transparent.
How do I convert WebP to JPEG?
Choose the WebP file above and download the JPEG. It runs in your browser.
Why is the JPEG bigger than my WebP?
JPEG compresses less efficiently than WebP at similar quality. Our files grew 1.6 to 2.2 times.
Does it lose quality?
A little: both formats are lossy. At 0.92 our results scored SSIM 0.969 or better.
What about transparency?
It becomes white, because JPG has no transparency.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser.
Can I make the file smaller?
Use the compress tool or the target size tool after converting.
