Convert WebM to GIF
Short answer
Drop your WebM file into the converter below and download the GIF file. It runs in your browser with FFmpeg, for files up to 100 MB; nothing is uploaded. The file is re-encoded to an animated GIF with no audio track. Re-encoding takes longer than a container swap and costs some quality; how much depends on the clip and on the quality setting, and at the converter's default setting the loss can be visible, so keep the original.
Maximum file size: 100 MB. The first conversion loads a ~30 MB converter engine, once per visit. Nothing is uploaded - conversion runs on your device.
GIF is a low-color, audio-free loop. · Lossy re-encode · Browser-side via FFmpeg WASM - nothing uploaded.
Key takeaways
- GIF is much larger than WebM: our 2.37 MB VP9 WebM became a 41.4 MB GIF, 17.5 times bigger.
- The converter keeps the full frame size and frame rate, 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps in our test.
- Quality dropped to SSIM 0.6608 against the original video because GIF has 256 colors per frame.
- A WebM already plays in browsers and is accepted by TikTok's API and LinkedIn; convert to GIF only for places that require it.
Measured: size and quality
Measured on a 10 second, 1920 × 1080, 30 fps excerpt of Big Buck Bunny (animated film, not camera footage; (c) Blender Foundation, CC BY 3.0) as H.264 plus stereo AAC 192 kbps, using the same ffmpeg arguments this converter passes to its WebAssembly build, run with ffmpeg 6.1.1. Results describe this file, not every file.
The WebM input was made from the same excerpt with VP9 CRF 32.
| Check | Result |
|---|---|
| Input | WebM (VP9 + Opus), 2,368,239 bytes |
| Output | GIF, 41,442,730 bytes (17.5 times bigger) |
| Frame size and rate | 1920 × 1080, 30 fps (same as the input) |
| SSIM against the original video | 0.6608 |
| Time, native ffmpeg | 5.1 s |
Audio is dropped: GIF has none.
WebM vs GIF
| WebM | GIF | |

Need a smaller GIF?
This converter keeps the video's full frame size and frame rate, which is exactly what makes GIFs large: on a 5 second 1920 × 1080 excerpt it wrote 27.68 MB. The Video to GIF tool lets you pick the width, frame rate and length and builds the palette from your clip: the same excerpt was 1.81 MB at 480 px and 12 frames a second.
Make it smaller
ffmpeg -i in.webm -vf "fps=12,scale=480:-1:flags=lanczos,split[s0][s1];[s0]palettegen[p];[s1][p]paletteuse" out.gif- Trim first: GIF size is proportional to duration. Three seconds of footage is a more reasonable GIF than ten.
When to keep the WebM instead
WebM plays in web browsers with a video element, is a fraction of the GIF's size, and TikTok's Content Posting API and LinkedIn list it among accepted formats. If a site only takes images, a GIF is the fallback.
Questions people ask
Is this WebM to GIF converter free and private?
Yes. It is free, needs no account and runs entirely in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
Will converting WebM to GIF reduce quality?
Some, because GIF is lossless, but limited to 256 colors and the file is re-encoded. How much depends on the clip and on the quality setting, and at the converter's default setting the loss can be visible, so keep the original. For uploads, the platform re-encodes again anyway.
Is there a file size limit?
Files up to 100 MB. The first conversion downloads a converter engine of about 30 MB once per visit; larger files are better handled by a desktop app such as HandBrake or FFmpeg.
Why is my GIF so large and silent?
GIF stores every frame with at most 256 colors and no sound, so it is far larger than the same clip in MP4. Keep GIFs short and small, or post MP4 where the platform accepts it.
Why is a GIF so much bigger than a WebM?
GIF stores frames with a basic palette-based compression, while WebM uses modern video codecs. Our WebM was 2.4 MB and the GIF 41.4 MB.
Does the GIF keep the sound?
No. GIF has no audio track.
What settings keep a GIF small?
Under 500 px wide, 10 to 15 fps, a generated palette, and a short loop.
Is there a size limit in the converter?
It accepts files up to 100 MB; very large outputs may not fit in browser memory.
