What is jpeg?
The standard compressed photo format - small files, no transparency, accepted everywhere.
JPEG throws away image detail a viewer is statistically unlikely to notice, which is what makes photo files so much smaller than a lossless format like PNG at the cost of some quality - usually invisible at reasonable compression levels, visible as blocky artifacts if pushed too far.
JPEG has no transparency support at all - a transparent PNG saved as a JPEG gets a solid background color (usually white) instead. It remains the safest universal choice for ordinary photos with no transparency need.
