Short answer

For carousel ads, Meta lists three shapes: 1:1, 4:5 and 9:16. At 1:1 the recommended size is 1024 × 1024 px on Facebook and 1080 × 1080 px on Messenger, Audience Network and Instagram Feed. Each carousel takes 2 to 10 cards of up to 30 MB.

Key takeaways

  • This page covers Meta's ad format. The Business Help Center page we read describes carousel ads and says nothing about organic carousels on a Facebook Page.
  • Facebook sizes: 1:1 is 500 × 500 px minimum and 1024 × 1024 px recommended; 9:16 is 500 × 888 px minimum and 1080 × 1920 px recommended; 4:5 is 600 × 750 px minimum and 1080 × 1350 px recommended.
  • The 4:5 shape on Facebook is only available for Advantage+ catalog ads built in the carousel format with product images from your catalog.
  • Images are .jpg or .png, at most 30 MB each. Videos can be up to 240 minutes (15 seconds recommended) and 4 GB.
  • Instagram placements differ: 1:1 or 4:5 in Feed at 1080 × 1080 px, 9:16 in Stories at 1080 × 1920 px, up to 10 cards in Feed and 3 in Stories, with a 1% ratio tolerance against 3% on Facebook.

What Meta publishes

The Design specifications for carousel ads page is organized by placement. It says the carousel format displays two or more images and videos in a single ad, each with its own headline, description, link and call to action, then gives a block of rules for Facebook, another for Messenger and Meta Audience Network, and a third for Instagram.

Meta Business Help Center: Design specifications for carousel ads, Facebook block, read 2026-10-09.

4:5 (catalog carousels only)600 × 750 px1080 × 1350 px
9:16500 × 888 px1080 × 1920 px

Meta gives the same limits across all three Facebook shapes: 2 to 10 cards, .jpg and .png, 30 MB at most per image, and an aspect ratio tolerance of 3% on Facebook.

Messenger, Audience Network and Instagram

Messenger and Meta Audience Network take a single shape, 1:1, with 1080 × 1080 px recommended and 2 to 10 cards. Instagram takes 1:1 or 4:5 in Feed (1080 × 1080 px) and 9:16 in Stories (1080 × 1920 px), with a ratio tolerance of 1%.

Instagram carousels allow up to 10 cards in Feed but only 3 in Stories. Video length is up to 2 minutes in Feed and up to 15 seconds in Stories.

Checking the shapes against the numbers

The minimums and recommendations match the shapes they name. 600 / 750 is 0.8, the same as 1080 / 1350, so both are 4:5. 500 / 888 is 0.563 and 1080 / 1920 is 0.5625, so both are 9:16. 1024 / 1024 and 1080 / 1080 are both 1:1.

That means you can design every card at one ratio and export it at the larger recommended size, and the same artwork passes the minimum. The pixel counts show the gap: the 1:1 minimum is 250,000 pixels and the recommended 1080 × 1080 is 1,166,400, 4.7 times as many.

Copy limits on the same page

Meta lists text limits next to the image rules. On Facebook, Messenger and Audience Network the primary text is 125 characters, the headline 40 and the link description 25. On Instagram the text is up to 125 characters, with up to 30 hashtags.
