Instagram profile picture size
Short answer
The Instagram pages we read on 2026-10-07 give the rule a shared photo must satisfy, up to 1080 px wide, and any aspect ratio from 1.91:1 to 3:4 is kept uncropped. A square is 1:1, so it is never ratio-cropped, and 800 x 800 px is the practical upload because it covers a 2x screen.
Key takeaways
- The Instagram help pages we read on 2026-10-07 give a width rule for shared photos, up to 1080 px with ratios from 1.91:1 to 3:4 kept uncropped, and no avatar figure of their own. A square 800 x 800 px upload covers a 2x screen inside that band.
- A square is 1:1, inside that range, so a square avatar is never ratio-cropped. The circle is the only crop.
- The circle is the only crop, and it removes 21.5% of the area: at 800 x 800 px the corners clip 166 px in and 566 px survives intact.
- 800 x 800 px covers a 2x screen at a 110 px avatar. 320 px is Instagram's floor for shared photos, not an avatar recommendation.
- A grid of posts shows the avatar at roughly 40 px, where thin detail and small text disappear entirely.

Device pixels at each display size
| Display size | Device pixels at 1x | at 2x | at 3x | Against this upload |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In a grid of posts, 40 px | 40 px | 80 px (40 x 2) | 120 px (40 x 3) | 800 px covers it |
| On your profile, 110 px | 110 px | 220 px (110 x 2) | 330 px (110 x 3) | 800 px covers it |
Computed at the grid and profile sizes; 800 px covers both.

ffmpeg 6.1.1. Upper bounds: a flat logo or a soft portrait compresses much further. The full method is in the evidence file.

The only rule Instagram publishes for photos
Instagram Help's "Image resolution of photos you share on Instagram" is the only place it states hard dimensions, and it is about the feed rather than the avatar. It says Instagram shares a photo at the best quality resolution possible, up to a width of 1080 pixels.
It then gives the full behavior in three sentences, which is more useful than any single recommended size. A photo between 320 and 1080 px wide keeps its original resolution as long as its aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4; a photo outside that ratio is cropped to the nearest supported ratio; a photo below 320 px wide is enlarged to 320 px; a photo above 1080 px is sized down to 1080 px.
None of the four Instagram pages we read on 2026-10-07 gives an avatar dimension, which is why this page does not present a number as an Instagram rule.
| Uploaded width | What Instagram does | Resulting width |
|---|---|---|
| Under 320 px | enlarged | 320 px |
| 320 to 1080 px, ratio 1.91:1 to 3:4 | kept at original resolution | unchanged |
| Over 1080 px | sized down | 1080 px |
| Any width, ratio outside 1.91:1 to 3:4 | cropped to the nearest supported ratio | cropped |
A square is 1:1, which sits between 1.91:1 and 3:4, so a square upload is never ratio-cropped. Sprout Social's guide lists the Instagram profile photo at 110 x 110 px, which is a display size rather than an upload one; Canva's table lists the same 110 x 110 px.
Why 800 x 800 rather than 320
Instagram shows the avatar in at least two very different places: about 40 px in the corner of a grid, and nearer 110 px on the profile. Both are well below 320 px, which is why the 320 px figure that circulates is a floor rather than a target.
On a 2x phone the 110 px avatar needs 220 device pixels; on 3x it needs 330. An 800 px square covers both with room over, sits inside Instagram's own 1080 px ceiling, and in the measured run below is a third of the size of the same image as PNG.
Going above 1000 px buys nothing, because the avatar is never displayed at anything close to that and Instagram will size anything wider than 1080 px down anyway.
What the circle removes, at each position
Instagram displays the avatar as a circle inscribed in your square. The corners go first, then the edges, and the diagonal decides how much of a shoulder survives.
The table below is computed from the square. The clearest way to use it: the largest square entirely inside the circle is 566 px of an 800 px upload, so anything within 117 px of each edge is at risk.
- Face centered, with headroom above the hair. A crop tight against the top of the circle reads as a cut-off headshot.
- Shoulders inside the inscribed square. They are the widest element of most avatars and clip first.
- One background tone with contrast against hair and clothing, so the silhouette separates at 40 px.
- No text. Text set across a square disappears at the circle edges before it gets small.
- Filters that hold up when reduced. Instagram recompresses on upload, and a heavy grain gets amplified.
Getting a full-resolution copy of an avatar
Autocomplete for this query is crowded with "full size" and "download full size" variants, which are a different question from this one. Those searches are people who have lost their own avatar, usually after changing phones.
Instagram serves a downscaled, already-compressed avatar to other people. There is no Instagram page documenting a full-resolution export, because none exists in the pages we checked.
- Recover the file from the device you uploaded from. That is the only genuinely full-resolution copy.
- If you have edited it since, look for the original before the edit. Editing apps keep the source.
- If it was someone else's photo, ask for the original file rather than downloading the avatar.
- Do not use an avatar downloader website. It serves the same downscaled file the app serves and cannot recover pixels that were never sent.
Frequently asked questions
What size should an Instagram profile picture be?
The Instagram help pages we read on 2026-10-07 give a width rule for shared photos, up to 1080 px, with ratios from 1.91:1 to 3:4 kept uncropped, and no avatar figure. A square 800 x 800 px upload is the practical choice: it covers a 2x screen and sits inside that published band.
Is 320 x 320 big enough for Instagram?
It is the floor Instagram enforces for shared photos: anything narrower is enlarged to 320 px. On a 2x or 3x phone the avatar is upscaled from 320 px and looks soft, so 800 x 800 px is the better upload within the same published band.
Does Instagram crop the profile picture?
The avatar is drawn as a circle inside your square, so the corners go first. At the 800 x 800 px frame on this page the table above gives 166 px of clearance from each edge and a 566 px square surviving intact.
What aspect ratio is an Instagram profile photo?
Square, 1:1. Instagram keeps ratios from 1.91:1 to 3:4 uncropped, so 1:1 is inside the supported range and is never ratio-cropped. Only the circle crop applies.
Can I get the full-size version of an Instagram profile picture?
Not from the pages we checked. The avatar Instagram serves to other people is a downscaled, already-compressed copy, and none of the four Instagram pages we read on 2026-10-07 describes an export. The original is the file on the device you uploaded from; download it from there or ask the owner for it.
Does Instagram compress profile pictures?
Instagram states it shares photos at up to 1080 px wide and resizes anything outside that. None of the four Instagram pages we read gives a separate avatar compression figure, so the effect on an 800 px upload is not documented there.
