Snapchat profile picture size
Short answer
Three publishers put the Snapchat avatar at 320 x 320 px, with a 2 MB cap, and all of them describe it as a circle. Snapchat's own help page returned a 404 on 2026-10-07, so none of that is a Snapchat rule. Upload 640 x 640 px, which covers a 3x screen at a 100 px avatar.
Key takeaways
- The Snapchat consumer help article returned a 404 on 2026-10-07. Nothing here is a Snapchat specification.
- SocialPilot and Buffer independently report 320 x 320 px; SocialPilot also reports a 2 MB maximum.
- A 320 px file is exactly enough for a 40 px avatar at 2x and nothing more. 640 x 640 px covers 3x.
- The avatar is a circle, so the mask is what costs you: at 640 x 640 px the corner clearance is 133 px and 453 px survives as an intact square.
- Snapchat Business publishes a figure for its public profile header, which is a different asset with its own page.

What the circle removes
| Quantity | Value | Working |
|---|---|---|
| 640 px | the side (diameter = side, because the circle is inscribed) | |
| 321,699 px2 | 78.5% of the square (pi x (640 / 2)^2 = 321699) | |
| 87,901 px2 | 21.5% of the square (640^2 - 321,699 = 87,901) | |
| 132.5 px | from each edge ((640 / 2) x (sqrt(2) - 1) = 132.5) | |
| 452.5 px | largest square inside the circle (640 / sqrt(2) = 452.5) |

Device pixels at each display size
| Display size | Device pixels at 1x | at 2x | at 3x | Against this upload |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In a chat list, 40 px | 40 px | 80 px (40 x 2) | 120 px (40 x 3) | 640 px covers it |

Two sources agreeing is better than one, and still not a rule
Snapchat's consumer support site returned "We can't find the page you're looking for" for the profile article on 2026-10-07, and the same for the account article. Snapchat Business's help center did load, which is why the business header figure is published on its own page with a named source.
Two independent guides report the same consumer avatar figure. SocialPilot's social media image sizes guide reports 320 x 320 px recommended and 2 MB maximum, and Buffer's 2026 guide lists 320 x 320 px in its Snapchat row. Canva's table also lists 320 x 320 px.
Agreement across three publishers is worth something even without a primary source. It is still not a Snapchat rule, and the upload recommendation below comes from the display arithmetic rather than from them.

|---|---|---|
| Profile picture, recommended | 320 x 320 px | SocialPilot |
| Profile picture, recommended | 320 x 320 px | Buffer, 2026-05-12 |

Why 640 x 640 rather than the reported 320 x 320
Snapchat shows a profile photo in at least three places: a small circle next to a name in a chat list, a larger one in a group header, and a still larger one on the profile. The chat list one is about 40 px; the profile one is nearer 100 px.
A 320 px file is exactly enough for 40 px at 2x. At 100 px on a 2x screen you need 200 px, which 320 covers, and on 3x you need 300 px, which it also covers. So 320 is defensible at these sizes.
The reason to upload 640 is recompression. The reported figures describe the file you send, not what arrives, and extra source pixels give the platform's encoder something to keep rather than nothing. In the measured run below, 640 x 640 px is 60 kB as JPEG, well under the reported 2 MB.
The circle at 640 x 640
Every guide that mentions the Snapchat avatar describes it as circular, so the standard mask arithmetic applies. A circle inscribed in a square of side s keeps 78.54% of the area and removes 21.46%.
At 640 px the corner clearance is 133 px and the largest square entirely inside the circle is 453 px. A Snapchat avatar is very often a head-and-shoulders crop, and shoulders are what the circle clips first.
SocialPilot separately reports a Story safe zone of 210 px at the top and 435 px at the bottom. That is a single-source claim about an interface, not a specification, and it is arithmetic on a 1080 x 1920 frame rather than a figure Snapchat publishes: 210 px is 10.9% of the height and 435 px is 22.7%.
Getting the full-size avatar back
Autocomplete for this query is dominated by "full size", "full size download" and "viewer" variants, which are a different question. Those searches are people trying to get a copy of an avatar, usually because they lost their own.
Snapchat serves a downscaled avatar, and none of the three Snapchat pages we fetched on 2026-10-07 describes a full-resolution export. The original is on the device it was set from.
- Open your own profile and look for a recently set photo option. Some accounts keep earlier avatars selectable.
- Recover the file from the device you set it from. That is the only full-resolution copy.
- Do not use an avatar downloader site. It fetches the same downscaled file the app serves and cannot recover pixels that were never sent.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a Snapchat profile picture?
The Snapchat consumer help pages we fetched on 2026-10-07 all returned 404s. SocialPilot, Buffer and Canva all report 320 x 320 px, and SocialPilot reports a 2 MB maximum. Upload 640 x 640 px to cover 3x screens.
Can I get the full-size version of a Snapchat profile picture?
Not from the pages we checked. The avatar Snapchat serves is a downscaled copy, and none of the three consumer help pages we fetched on 2026-10-07 describes an export tool. The original is on the device you set it from, or in a recently set photo on your own profile where the app offers it.
Does Snapchat crop the profile picture?
Every guide that describes it says circular. The inscribed circle keeps 78.5% of the area, computed as 1 − pi/4, with corners clipped 0.207 × the side in from each edge. At 640 x 640 px that is 133 px, and the intact square is 453 px.
How large can a Snapchat profile photo file be?
SocialPilot reports a 2 MB maximum. The Snapchat pages we fetched on 2026-10-07 gave no file limit, so that is a publisher figure. At 640 x 640 px you are far below 2 MB regardless.
What is the Snapchat public profile header size?
375 x 569 px to upload, of which 375 x 258 px is visible on the profile, under 2 MB on the web upload path. That is the one Snapchat image size with a published source: the Business Help Center article read 2026-10-07.
