Audio is too quiet on the destination - causes and fixes
Each destination has a recommended loudness target. If your mix is quieter than the target, the destination does not boost it for you. Normalize to the target's LUFS in your editor before exporting.
Check these first
- Measure the integrated loudness of your master with a LUFS meter.
- Compare against the destination's recommended LUFS target.
- Test playback on the actual destination before assuming the mix is wrong.
Likely causes
- Mix is below the destination's recommended LUFS
Targets vary: Spotify ~-16 LUFS, YouTube ~-14 LUFS, podcast ~-16 LUFS.
- Master fader pulled down to avoid clipping
Reducing gain to fix clipping can leave the mix too quiet.
Fix it
- Normalize to the destination's loudness target
Apply normalization in your editor; verify with a LUFS meter.
