"Unsupported video format" - what it actually means and how to fix it
An unsupported-format error may refer to the internal container, codec or upload surface. The filename extension alone cannot distinguish these. Check the scoped requirements, then test a fresh export from the original if needed.
Check these first
- The file extension (container)
- Whether the file plays normally in a standard video player first
- Whether the file came from an unusual source: a screen recorder, an old camera, a downloaded rip
Likely causes
- the source container may not match the upload requirements
Check the documented formats for the exact upload surface. A filename alone does not prove the internal container or the cause of rejection. A MP4 export is a fallback to test, not a guarantee.
- A listed container can still hold an unsuitable codec
the source file is just packaging - it can hold several different video codecs. An editing codec (ProRes, DNxHR) or an unusual encoder setting inside an otherwise-accepted the source file can still be rejected even though the extension is right.
- The export itself is incomplete or corrupted
An interrupted export, a killed app, or a file copied while still writing can look fine in a file browser but fail to open or upload anywhere. Re-export from the original source rather than re-trying the same file.
Fix it
- Convert it to MP4
This browser converter accepts files up to 100 MB, re-encodes them and can lose quality. Convert a copy from the original and preview the generated video and audio before uploading it yourself.
Convert to MP4 - Re-export from the original source
Rather than repairing a suspect file, export a fresh copy from the camera roll or editor and try that instead.
Check your file
Extension and MIME type are labels, not proof of the container. Dimensions and duration come from this browser's media reader. This does not detect codecs, bitrate, corruption or platform upload compatibility. Files and measurements are not sent anywhere.
