Wi-Fi QR code generator

No uploadRuns in your browserReviewed October 9, 2026

Short answer

Enter the network name, the password and the security type, and the tool writes the standard Wi-Fi text, WIFI:T:WPA;S:name;P:password;;, into a QR code that Android and iOS 11 or later can use to join the network after asking the user. A normal home network came out as Version 3 (29 × 29). The password is stored in the code as plain text, so anyone who scans it can read it. Nothing is uploaded.

Enter the network name.

Nothing is uploaded: the code is drawn in your browser. Codes do not expire and carry no tracking.

Key takeaways

  • The text follows the ZXing wiki: T is the authentication type (WEP, WPA, WPA2-EAP or nopass), S the network name, P the password and H true for a hidden network. ZXing says order does not matter and notes support on Android and iOS 11 or later.
  • Characters \ ; , " and : in the name or password must be escaped with a backslash. The tool does this: the name foo;bar\baz becomes foo\;bar\\baz, and a code with those characters in both fields still decoded to exactly the text we built (47 characters, Version 4 (33 × 33)).
  • Sizes at level M: a short name and password is Version 3 (29 × 29), a 32 character name with a 63 character password is Version 7 (45 × 45), an open network is Version 3 (29 × 29), and marking the network hidden adds 7 characters without changing the version.
  • The code holds the password in plain text. Print it where only people who should join can see it, and change the password if the code leaks.
  • The tool works on the page: nothing about your network is sent anywhere.

What the code contains

A Wi-Fi code is plain text in a fixed shape. The ZXing wiki, which Android scanners follow, describes it this way.

The Wi-Fi fields from the ZXing wiki, read 2026-10-09.
FieldExampleMeaning
TWPAAuthentication type: WEP, WPA, WPA2-EAP, or nopass for no password
SmynetworkNetwork name (SSID), required
PmypassPassword, ignored if T is nopass
HtrueOptional: true if the network is hidden

A full example is WIFI:T:WPA;S:mynetwork;P:mypass;;. The tool writes WIFI:T:WPA;S:Home;P:sunflower88;; for a network called Home.

Escaping special characters

A network name or password that contains a backslash, a semicolon, a comma, a double quote or a colon would break the text, so each is written with a backslash in front. The ZXing wiki gives the example of an SSID that is literally "foo;bar\baz". The tool turns foo\;bar\\baz into the escaped form shown below.

You typeThe code holdsCharactersSizeDecoded text matches
name foo;bar\baz, password p:a;s,s"wordWIFI:T:WPA;S:foo\;bar\\baz;P:p\:a\;s\,s\"word;;47Version 4 (33 × 33)Yes

A real encoding of special characters, decoded back to the exact text.

Measured: how big a Wi-Fi code gets

Measured with the qrcode library the tool uses and the jsQR decoder; the method is on the QR code generator page. One decoder is not every phone, so test a print on yours.

Wi-Fi codes at error correction level M.
NetworkCharactersSize
Short name, WPA33Version 3 (29 × 29)
Hidden network, WPA40Version 3 (29 × 29)
Open network30Version 3 (29 × 29)
Special characters, WPA47Version 4 (33 × 33)
Long name and 63 character password, WPA113Version 7 (45 × 45)

Even the longest case fits in a code that scans easily. Level M is the usual choice; use Q or H if the code will be on a wall that gets dirty.

Before you print it

  • Test it with a phone that is not connected to the network.
  • Choose the right security type. If joining fails, the type is the first thing to check.
  • Put the code where guests can see it and strangers cannot.
  • Keep the dark color much darker than the light one; below 3 to 1 contrast our decoder failed.
  • Print it large enough to scan from a short distance; our decoder needed a margin of at least one module and a sharp image.

Questions people ask

How do I make a QR code for my Wi-Fi?

Enter the network name, the password and the security type, then download the code. Scanning it asks the phone to join.

Which phones can scan a Wi-Fi code?

The ZXing wiki lists Android and iOS 11 or later. Test on the phones your guests use.

What security type should I choose?

The one your router uses. The format knows WEP, WPA, WPA2-EAP and nopass for an open network.

Is the password visible in the code?

Yes. It is plain text, so anyone who scans the code can read it.

My network name has a semicolon. Will it work?

Yes. The tool escapes ; , : " and \ with a backslash. A name and password using all of them decoded back to the same text in our test.

How do I do a hidden network?

Tick the hidden option. It adds H:true to the text.

Is my password uploaded?

No. The code is drawn in your browser.
