Resize a photo for X (Twitter)

Short answer

X publishes a profile photo size of 400 x 400 px and a header of 1500 x 500 px. The post image pages returned a bot wall when we fetched them on 2026-10-07, so the widely reported 1600 x 900 px landscape frame is used here. Resize to 1200 x 630 px instead if the same image has to work as a link card.

Key takeaways

  • X publishes 400 x 400 px for the profile photo and 1500 x 500 px for the header, both marked recommended.
  • For post images no X page we could read publishes a size, so the frames here are third-party reports.
  • If the image will also be a link preview, use 1200 x 630 px. Meta publishes that figure and asks for 1.91:1.
  • Computed: a 1200 x 630 px frame keeps 99.9% of its area in a 1.91:1 card and 52.5% in a square tile.
  • The resize runs in your browser on the canvas API. Nothing is uploaded.

X publishes a profile photo size of 400 x 400 px and a header of 1500 x 500 px. The post image pages returned a bot wall when we fetched them on 2026-10-07, so this tool writes 1600 x 900 px, the frame two guides report. Below that: a crop table for the five shapes people actually post.

Batch is unlimited and free - every image is processed on your device, so there is no queue and no daily cap.

What each source shape loses

A post image is shown in one shape in the timeline, so a source of a different shape gets cropped. Computed below for each shape at the 1600 x 900 px frame.

What X publishes, checked 2026-10-05

The X Help article on customizing a profile gives two numbers: a header photo, "also known as a banner", at 1500 x 500 pixels recommended, and a profile photo at 400 x 400 pixels recommended. It also notes that the bio is limited to 160 characters, which is a different limit entirely.

That article contains nothing about post images. When we re-fetched the X help pages on 2026-10-07 they returned a bot wall of 258 characters, so post-image figures on this page come from publishers and are labeled as such.

If one image has to work in the feed and as a link preview, design 1200 x 630 px. That is Meta's published figure, it matches LinkedIn's published 1200 x 627 px ratio to within a pixel, and it avoids the crop entirely on both.

Reading the crop numbers above

The tool scales to fill and center-crops, so a source that is not 16:9 loses pixels at the edges. Computed as cover crop: the scale is the larger of 1600 / source width and 900 / source height, and the overflow is halved to each side.

1080 x 1920 (9:16)1.48150 px675 px30.4%

Cover crop of common photo shapes into a 1600 x 900 px frame.

A vertical clip keeps under a third of its area in a 16:9 frame. For vertical content on X, use 1080 x 1350 px and let it be tall rather than forcing it into a landscape frame.

The avatar and the header

X publishes both of those. The profile photo at 400 x 400 px is a circle, so the same 21.5% mask applies: keep content inside the inner 283 px.

The header at 1500 x 500 px is 3:1. Computed across viewports: a 390 px phone shows 390 / 3 = 130 px of the 500 px height, so 370 px of height is cropped away. Keep text inside the middle 500 x 500 px square.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize a photo for X?

Pick your image in the tool above and it scales and center-crops it to 1600 x 900 px in your browser, nothing uploaded. If the image will also be used as a link card, resize to 1200 x 630 px instead.

What size is an X profile picture?

400 x 400 px, which X marks as recommended in its profile customization help. X publishes no other avatar figure, and the photo is shown as a circle.

What size is an X header or banner?

1500 x 500 px recommended, which is 3:1. On a 390 px phone only about 130 px of that height is visible (computed: 390 / 3), so keep text in the middle 500 px band.

Does X publish a post image size?

Not on the pages we could read. The profile help article covers the avatar and header only, and the post-image pages returned a bot wall on 2026-10-07. The 1600 x 900 px figure comes from publishers and is labeled as a report.

What size should an X link preview image be?

1200 x 630 px. Meta publishes that as the best display size for link shares and asks for a 1.91:1 ratio, and 1200 / 630 = 1.905. LinkedIn publishes the same ratio at 1200 x 627 px.

Will resizing for X reduce quality?

Scaling down and cropping does not; scaling up does. From a 4032 px phone photo, cropping to 1600 x 900 px keeps 83.3% of the source area and every remaining pixel is real. Upscaling a small image is what invents detail.
