Workflow

Prepare a WebM recording for social upload

Updated 3 steps

Short answer

Browser recorders and OBS often produce WebM. YouTube accepts it; most other platforms do not, so the same file uploads in one place and fails in another.

The decision that matters: Whether to convert at all. Uploading the WebM directly to YouTube avoids a re-encode entirely; converting is only worth it for destinations that need MP4.

Step by step

  1. Check what you actually have

Read the dimensions, ratio, duration and size off the file before deciding anything. Most bad exports come from assuming the source rather than looking at it.

    Inspect the file →

  2. Check whether the destination takes WebM

Converting a file the destination already accepts costs quality for nothing.

    Does YouTube accept WebM? →

  3. Convert to MP4 for everywhere else

This is a genuine re-encode from VP8/VP9 to H.264, not a container swap, so expect some quality cost.

    Convert WebM to MP4 →

Limits to know

  • WebM to MP4 always re-encodes; there is no fast copy path between these codecs.
  • Browser recordings are often variable frame rate, which some editors handle badly.
