What is video resolution?
Short answer
The pixel dimensions of a video or image - width × height - which determines how much detail it can show.
Key takeaways
- Video resolution is the width and height of each frame in pixels, such as 1920 × 1080.
- 1080p is Full HD, 1440p is QHD, 4K UHD is 3840 × 2160 and 8K is 7680 × 4320.
- More pixels need more bitrate; a well-encoded 1080p file can beat a starved 4K one.
- Export vertical video at 1080 × 1920 and landscape at 1920 × 1080 or 4K.
Resolution explained
Resolution and aspect ratio are different things measured together: 1080×1920 is both a resolution (roughly 2 million pixels) and a 9:16 ratio. Two files can share a ratio while one looks noticeably sharper because it has more pixels.
Higher resolution means a larger file at the same visual quality, so platforms publish a maximum they'll accept or usefully display - uploading beyond it wastes bandwidth without adding visible sharpness once the platform re-encodes the file down.
Kinds of resolution
Video resolution
The width and height of each frame in pixels, such as 1920 × 1080. The short names (1080p, 4K) describe this.
Screen resolution
How many pixels a display has. A phone with a 1170 × 2532 screen shows a 1080 × 1920 video nearly pixel for pixel; on a 4K TV the same video is scaled up.
Image resolution (megapixels)
Photos are described by total pixels: a 12-megapixel phone photo is 4032 × 3024. A 4K video frame is about 8.3 megapixels.
Print resolution (PPI and DPI)
For printing, what matters is pixels per inch at the printed size: 300 PPI is the usual target for photo prints. Our DPI calculator converts pixels to print sizes.
Where the names come from
The "p" names count the lines of a landscape frame: 1080p has 1,080 rows of pixels, and the p means progressive (whole frames) rather than interlaced (1080i). The "K" names count the width in thousands of pixels, roughly: 4K UHD is 3,840 wide and cinema 4K is 4,096. So "4K" and "2160p" are the same consumer format. Standard definition, 480p (720 × 480) and 576p (720 × 576), dates from analog TV.
Common video resolutions
| Name | Pixels (landscape) | Pixel count | Compared with 1080p |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p (HD) | 1280 × 720 | 921,600 | 0.44× |
| 1080p (Full HD) | 1920 × 1080 | 2,073,600 | 1× |
| 1440p (QHD) | 2560 × 1440 | 3,686,400 | 1.78× |
| 2160p (4K UHD) | 3840 × 2160 | 8,294,400 | 4× |
| DCI 4K (cinema) | 4096 × 2160 | 8,847,360 | 4.27× |
| 4320p (8K UHD) | 7680 × 4320 | 33,177,600 | 16× |
Resolution and aspect ratio together
A vertical 1080p video is 1080 × 1920: the same pixel count as 1920 × 1080, turned on its side. Resolution says how many pixels; aspect ratio says what shape they make.
Upload resolution limits
| Platform | Largest upload | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | Up to 8K | Higher resolutions are processed after the lower ones |
| Instagram (API) | Up to 1920 px wide for reels and video | Larger uploads are scaled down |
| TikTok (API) | 4096 px on each side | Minimum 360 px |
Pixel density: why a phone looks sharper than a TV
Sharpness on a screen depends on pixels per inch (PPI) and viewing distance, not only resolution. A 6-inch phone at 1080 × 2400 packs over 400 PPI, so 1080p looks crisp; a 65-inch 4K TV has about 68 PPI but is watched from meters away. That is why 1080p remains enough for short-form video, while 4K matters on big screens.
Resolution, sharpness and file size
- More pixels only mean more detail if the bitrate keeps up; a starved 4K file can look worse than a well-encoded 1080p one.
- Upscaling (exporting 1080p footage as 4K) adds no real detail. Some creators do it because YouTube streams higher resolutions at higher bitrates, which can make the stream look cleaner.
- Downscaling (4K to 1080p) usually looks sharper than recording at 1080p, because each output pixel averages several source pixels.
- Doubling width and height quadruples the pixels, and roughly doubles to quadruples the bitrate needed.
Resolution to use by platform
| Video type | Export at | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok, Reels, Shorts, stories | 1080 × 1920 | Platforms display vertical video at about this size |
| YouTube landscape | 1920 × 1080 or 3840 × 2160 | Upload 4K if you recorded it |
| Instagram feed video | 1080 × 1350 (4:5) | Fills the most screen in the feed |
| Instagram photos | 1080 px wide | Instagram shares photos at up to 1080 px wide |
How to check and change a video's resolution
- Check: Windows File Explorer > Properties > Details (frame width and height); Mac, QuickTime Player > Window > Show Movie Inspector; iPhone Photos, swipe up on the video.
- Change: choose the size in your editor's export settings, for example 1080 × 1920 for vertical video.
- To change the shape as well, crop to the new aspect ratio rather than stretching.

Frequently asked questions
What is resolution?
Resolution is the size of a frame in pixels, width × height. 1920×1080 has 2,073,600 pixels. More pixels can show more detail, but only if the bitrate is high enough to keep it.
What does the "p" in 1080p mean?
Progressive scan: every line of every frame is drawn, as opposed to interlaced (1080i). The number is the height in pixels of a landscape frame. YouTube asks for interlaced footage to be deinterlaced before upload.
Is 1440p 2K?
Not strictly. 2560×1440 is QHD; cinema 2K is 2048×1080. Monitors and phones often market 1440p as "2K".
What resolution does Instagram upload?
Photos are shared at up to 1080 px wide. Through the Instagram API, reels and videos can be up to 1920 px wide and images up to 1440 px wide.
Is 4K the same as 2160p?
For TVs, phones and YouTube, yes: 3840 × 2160, called 4K UHD. Cinema 4K is slightly wider, 4096 × 2160.
What is the best resolution for social media?
1080 × 1920 for vertical video and 1920 × 1080 for landscape. Higher resolutions are accepted by YouTube, but short-form apps display about 1080 px wide.
What is the difference between 1080p and 1080i?
Both are 1920 × 1080. 1080p shows every line in every frame; 1080i alternates odd and even lines, which causes combing on modern screens. Online video uses 1080p.
