Premiere Pro how-to
How to rotate a video in Premiere Pro (90°, 180° or any angle)
Short answer
Select the clip, open Effect Controls, expand Motion and type 90, 180 or -90 into Rotation. Rotating doesn't change the sequence frame, so a sideways phone clip turned 90° will sit small in the middle of a 16:9 sequence: either raise Scale, or make the sequence vertical (1080 × 1920) so the turned clip fills it.
Checked against: Adobe Premiere (formerly Premiere Pro), 2026 releases, Windows and Mac.
Method 1: Motion > Rotation
Open Effect Controls
Select the clip in the Timeline and choose Window > Effect Controls.

Set the angle
Expand Motion and enter a Rotation value: 90 turns clockwise, -90 counterclockwise, 180 flips upside down. Values above 360 add full turns.

Fill the frame
After a 90° turn the clip no longer matches the frame. Raise Scale until there are no bars, or right-click the clip and choose Set to Frame Size.
Method 2: Keep a phone clip vertical
If a vertical phone video shows up sideways, the goal is usually a vertical sequence, not a zoomed-in horizontal one.
Make a vertical sequence
Right-click the rotated clip in the Project panel and choose New Sequence From Clip, or create a sequence with a 1080 × 1920 frame size, then rotate the clip so it fills it.

Rotation values
| You want | Rotation | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Turn right a quarter | 90 | Scale or vertical sequence |
| Turn left a quarter | -90 (or 270) | Scale or vertical sequence |
| Upside down | 180 | Nothing else needed |
| Straighten a tilted horizon | 1 to 3 | Scale 103 to 106% to hide corners |
If it doesn't work
| What you see | Fix |
|---|---|
| Black corners after rotating | Any angle that isn't a multiple of 90 exposes corners. Raise Scale a few percent. |
| Rotated clip is tiny in the frame | The sequence is still landscape. Use a vertical sequence or scale the clip up. |
| Rotation animates when I didn't want it to | Toggle Animation is on for Rotation. Turn the stopwatch off to set a single value. |
| Need a mirror image, not a turn | Use the Horizontal Flip effect instead of Rotation. |
Questions people ask
How do I rotate a video 90 degrees in Premiere Pro?
Effect Controls > Motion > Rotation, type 90 (or -90). Then scale it or use a vertical sequence so it fills the frame.
How do I rotate all clips at once?
Put an adjustment layer over them and rotate the adjustment layer, or nest the clips and rotate the nest.
Why is my phone video sideways in Premiere?
Some phones store orientation as metadata that not every app reads. Rotate it in Premiere, or re-export it from the phone.

Adobe documents the Rotation control; Set to Frame Size, New Sequence From Clip and the adjustment-layer method follow Premiere's current menus as described by several current guides.
