Audio & playback
No sound on LinkedIn videos? Fixes for every device
Short answer
LinkedIn plays videos in the feed automatically without sound, so silence while scrolling is normal: tap or click the volume icon on the video to unmute. If it stays silent, check your device volume or Bluetooth output and, in a browser, whether the tab itself is muted. If your own upload is silent for everyone, the problem is in the file: re-export it with an AAC audio track.
Key takeaways
- LinkedIn plays feed videos automatically without sound; tap or click the volume icon on the player to hear them (LinkedIn Help).
- If one video is silent and others play sound, that file is the problem. If every video is silent, it is the browser tab, the device volume or the output device.
- The Sound effects setting turns LinkedIn's interface sounds on or off. It does not unmute videos.
- LinkedIn Learning audio problems: LinkedIn's own first fix is clearing the browser's cache and cookies, or signing out and back in.
- LinkedIn accepts MP4, MOV, AVI, WebM, MKV, WMV and more, from 75 KB to 5 GB and 3 seconds (2 in the app) to 15 minutes. A file that has sound on your computer but not on LinkedIn needs re-exporting with AAC audio.
Why LinkedIn videos play without sound
LinkedIn's help says some videos play automatically without sound as you scroll the feed. Silence while scrolling is therefore normal, and nothing is broken until a video stays silent after you unmute it.
Sound can be lost at three layers, and each needs a different fix: the LinkedIn player itself (muted autoplay), your browser or device (a muted tab, the wrong output, media volume at zero), or the video file (no audio track, or one the player cannot decode). The quickest way to tell them apart is to play a second LinkedIn video and a YouTube video in the same browser or app.
| Test | Result | Where the problem is |
|---|---|---|
| Unmute the player on two different LinkedIn videos | Both stay silent | Your browser, app or device |
| Play a YouTube video in the same browser | YouTube is silent too | Device volume or output device |
| Play a YouTube video in the same browser | YouTube has sound | The LinkedIn tab or site is muted |
| Unmute two different LinkedIn videos | One plays sound, one does not | The silent video's file |
| Play your own original file on your computer | Silent there too | The export dropped the audio |
Fix no sound on LinkedIn by device
Chrome, Edge and Firefox on a computer
- Chrome: right-click the LinkedIn tab and choose Unmute site. A muted site stays muted in every LinkedIn tab until you do.
- Edge: right-click the tab and choose Unmute tab, or click the speaker icon on the tab.
- Firefox: click the crossed-out speaker icon on the tab, or right-click the tab and choose Unmute Tab.
- Turn off video-related extensions for a test: LinkedIn's autoplay help warns that video player extensions can interfere with playback.
Safari on a Mac
- Click the speaker icon in the tab or address field to unmute the page.
- Safari → Settings for linkedin.com → Auto-Play: Allow All Auto-Play lets videos start with sound after you unmute them.
- System Settings → Sound → Output: check the selected output device, especially after unplugging headphones or a monitor.
Windows
- Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer: the browser can be muted or set to zero there on its own.
- Check the output device in the same screen; Windows sometimes switches to a monitor or a Bluetooth device you are not using.
LinkedIn app on iPhone and Android
- Tap the volume icon on the video, then raise the volume with the side buttons while the video plays, so you change media volume rather than the ringer.
- iPhone: if videos are silent in several apps, switch the Ring/Silent switch (or Action button) to Ring and test again.
- Disconnect Bluetooth headphones or car audio; sound may be playing there.
- Update the LinkedIn app, then force-close and reopen it.
Find your case
| What you see | What it usually means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Silent while scrolling the feed | Feed videos autoplay without sound | Tap the volume icon on the video (step 1) |
| Silent in Chrome or Firefox, fine on your phone | The browser tab or site is muted | Right-click the tab → Unmute site (step 2) |
| Turned on Sound effects, still silent | That setting controls app sound effects, not video audio | Use the video's volume icon instead (step 3) |
| Your own video is silent for everyone | The file has no audio track, or one players cannot decode | Inspect and re-export with AAC audio (step 4) |
| Viewers scroll past without sound | Most feed viewing starts muted | Add captions (step 5) |
Fix it step by step
Unmute the video
Some videos play automatically without sound as you scroll. Click or tap the volume icon on the player to unmute; on desktop you can also drag the volume bar.
Unmute the browser tab
Chrome and Firefox can mute a whole site. Right-click the LinkedIn tab and choose Unmute site, then check the system volume and the selected output device.
Ignore the Sound effects toggle
Settings & Privacy → Account preferences → Sound effects turns LinkedIn's interface sounds on or off. It does not unmute videos.
If your upload is silent, fix the file
Play the original file on your computer. If it is silent there, the export or a trim step dropped the audio. If it plays locally but not on LinkedIn, re-export as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio; uncommon audio codecs are the usual culprit. LinkedIn accepts MP4, MOV, WebM and other containers, 10-60 fps, 75 KB to 5 GB.
Add captions for muted viewers
When you upload, switch on Add auto captions, or review them before they go live. Captions can take some time to appear after posting.
Stop autoplay if it bothers you
Desktop: Me → Settings & Privacy → Account preferences → Autoplay videos. Mobile: profile photo → Settings & Privacy → Account preferences → Autoplay videos (Never, Wi-Fi only, or always).
No sound on LinkedIn Learning videos
LinkedIn Learning courses use a different player from the feed. LinkedIn's help for Learning says most audio and player problems are fixed by clearing the browser's cache and cookies, or by signing out and signing back in. If that does not help, try another browser with extensions turned off, because LinkedIn lists prohibited software and extensions on the same help page.
Subtitles are available on Learning courses, so you can keep watching while you fix the sound. If audio fails only on one course video, report it to Learning support with the course and video name, since that points to the file rather than your browser.
If your own LinkedIn video uploads without sound
Play the original file on your computer first. If it is silent there, the audio was lost before upload: the clip was muted in the editor, the audio track was turned off on export, or a screen recording captured no system sound. If it plays with sound locally but not on LinkedIn, the audio track is in a codec the LinkedIn player does not decode, or the file has more than one audio track and the player picked an empty one.
LinkedIn does not publish an audio codec list, so use the combination every browser can play: AAC, stereo, 48 kHz. Re-encoding only the audio keeps the picture untouched.
| Requirement | LinkedIn's limit |
|---|---|
| File types | MP4, MOV, AVI, WebM, MKV, WMV, VC1, MPEG/MPEG-2/MPEG-1, DV, QTRLE, TSCC2 |
| File size | 75 KB to 5 GB |
| Duration | 3 seconds (2 seconds in the mobile app) to 15 minutes |
| Resolution | 256 × 144 to 4096 × 2304 |
| Aspect ratio | 1:2.4 to 2.4:1 |
| Frame rate | 10 to 60 fps |
| Bitrate | 192 kbps to 30 Mbps |
| Not processed | ProRes may upload but will not process |
Check for an audio track: ffprobe -v error -select_streams a -show_entries stream=codec_name,channels,sample_rate -of csv=p=0 input.mp4. No output means the file has no audio at all.
Keep the video, re-encode only the audio: ffmpeg -i input.mov -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 160k -ac 2 -ar 48000 output.mp4. The -map options keep the first audio track, which fixes files where an empty track was picked.

Make your LinkedIn video work without sound
Because feed videos start muted, most viewers decide in silence whether to unmute. LinkedIn can add captions for you: when you upload, switch on Add auto captions, or turn on Review captions before viewers can see them. Captions can take some time to appear after posting, and for scheduled posts they are ready for review only after the video goes live.
Auto captions are currently supported in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Indonesian, Turkish, Arabic and Dutch (LinkedIn Help). For other languages, burn captions into the video before upload. Viewers turn captions on with the CC icon at the bottom right of the player.

Common mix-ups
- “Turning on Sound effects in LinkedIn settings brings back video sound.”
It only controls interface sound effects (LinkedIn Help: LinkedIn sound settings). Video sound is the volume icon on each player.
- “A video that autoplays silently has no audio.”
Autoplay is muted by design. Unmute the player before concluding the file is silent.
Frequently asked questions
How do I unmute videos on LinkedIn?
Tap or click the volume icon on the video player. In a desktop browser, also check that the tab is not muted (right-click the tab → Unmute site).
Why is my LinkedIn video playing but there is no sound?
Either the player or tab is muted, or the file's audio track is missing or in a codec the player cannot decode. Test the original file; if it has sound, re-export as MP4 with AAC audio.
How do I turn off sound on LinkedIn videos?
Tap the volume icon on the player. To stop videos playing on their own, change Autoplay videos under Settings & Privacy → Account preferences.
Why do LinkedIn videos play without sound automatically?
LinkedIn autoplays feed videos muted as you scroll, so the feed stays quiet. Tap or click the volume icon on a video to hear it.
Why is there no sound on LinkedIn videos on my iPhone?
Tap the volume icon on the video, raise the volume with the side buttons while it plays, and check that sound is not going to Bluetooth headphones. If several apps are silent, switch the Ring/Silent switch to Ring.
Can I make LinkedIn videos play with sound by default?
No. LinkedIn's autoplay setting only turns autoplay on or off; videos still start muted, and you unmute each one with its volume icon.
Why is there no sound on LinkedIn Learning?
LinkedIn recommends clearing your browser's cache and cookies, or signing out and back in. Then try another browser with extensions off.
Why does my video have sound on my computer but not on LinkedIn?
The audio track is in a codec the LinkedIn player does not decode, or the player picked an empty extra track. Re-export with one AAC stereo track at 48 kHz.
