Twitch profile banner size
Short answer
Every Twitch help article for banners returned a 404 on 2026-10-07 and the Wayback Machine holds no copy, so no Twitch rule is quoted. Kapwing and SocialSizes.io both report 1200 x 480 px. That is 2.5:1, not 16:9, and only the middle third of it survives on a phone.
Key takeaways
- Twitch help returned a 404 for every banner article we tried on 2026-10-07, and the Internet Archive holds no snapshot of them.
- Kapwing reports 1200 x 480 px and SocialSizes.io reports the same for the cover photo and the video player banner. Canva lists 1920 x 480 px.
- 1200 / 480 = 2.5, so the frame is 2.5:1, not 16:9.
- A 390 px phone shows about 156 px of the 480 px height, so about a third of the design is visible on mobile.
- Kapwing reports that the channel trailer blocks part of the left or right of the design and that the exact space depends on the browser width.

What we tried, and what came back
Twitch's help center returned "we couldn't find the page you were looking for" for every article we fetched, including the channel art, banner and profile picture articles. The Internet Archive holds no snapshot of any of them. Twitch also blocks the article from an automated fetch even when the URL is correct, which is why the Wayback check was worth doing at all.
Three publishers do report the frame, and two of them agree.

Kapwing adds that it prefers 1920 x 480 px for a crisper result on wider screens, and that the channel trailer blocks the left-center of the design. Both are the author's observations from a 2021 article, not Twitch specifications, so the viewport table below is computed from the frame ratio rather than taken from either.
The ratio is 2.5:1, which is why the phone crop is so severe
1200 / 480 = 2.5 exactly. A 2.5:1 banner is narrower than 16:9, so when it scales to the width of a screen the visible height is the viewport width divided by 2.5, and everything above and below that is cropped away.
At a 390 px phone that is 390 / 2.5 = 156 px of the 480 px height, which is 32.5%. Put differently: about 324 px of the 480 px design is not visible on a phone. That is not a crop of the banner as a crop of a photo, it is the banner being wider than the phone can show.
A 768 px tablet sees 307 px, which is 64% of the height. A 1440 px desktop sees the whole 1200 px canvas, scaled up rather than cropped. So the design that survives on every device is the middle 156 px of a 480 px banner: the middle third.
The reason to think in terms of the middle third rather than a bounding box is that the crop is vertical. Your left and right edges stay visible on a phone; your top and bottom do not. A logo at one end of a 1200 px banner survives mobile even though a headline in the top 150 px does not.
Laying out a banner that survives
- Design at 1200 x 480 px. Keep readable content in the middle 156 px, which is what a 390 px phone shows of the height.
- Treat the top and bottom 160 px as decoration. A pattern or a gradient is fine; text is not.
- Leave the left and right thirds for the channel name and anything else Twitch draws over the banner, since Kapwing reports the trailer blocks one side and the exact position depends on browser width.
- Remember the banner is offline-only. Kapwing describes the same behavior: the profile banner is replaced by the live stream while a broadcast is running.
- 1920 x 480 px is worth considering. It matches a wide desktop at 1:1 and gives a crisper image, which is why Kapwing recommends it, and Canva lists it too. It is not a Twitch requirement.
What the frame costs
In the measured run on this page, 1200 x 480 px is 88 kB as JPEG and 34 kB as WebP, against 869 kB as PNG. No publisher we read states a Twitch banner file limit.
At 88 kB the format choice barely matters for one upload. It matters if you manage banners for many channels, where the PNG-to-JPEG difference is 780 kB per banner.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a Twitch banner?
Every Twitch help article we fetched on 2026-10-07 returned a 404, and the Internet Archive holds no copy of them, so these are publisher figures: Kapwing and SocialSizes.io both report 1200 x 480 px, and Canva lists 1920 x 480 px.
Is a Twitch banner 1200 x 480 or 1920 x 480?
Both appear. 1200 x 480 px is what two sources report as the Twitch frame; 1920 x 480 px is Kapwing's recommendation for a crisper result on wide screens and Canva's listed video player banner. Neither is a Twitch rule.
Why is my Twitch banner cut off?
The banner keeps 2.5:1 and scales to the viewport width, so visible height is the width divided by 2.5. A 390 px phone shows about 156 px of the 480 px height, which is 32.5%, leaving about 324 px not visible. Keep readable content in the middle third.
When is a Twitch banner visible?
Only when the channel is offline. Kapwing describes the profile banner being replaced by the live stream while a broadcast is running, which matches what Twitch's default banner does.
What size is a Twitch profile picture?
The Twitch help articles we fetched on 2026-10-07 all returned 404s, so these are publisher figures. Canva lists 800 x 800 px and SocialSizes.io reports 720 x 720 px, 460 x 460 px and 300 x 300 px minimum.
