Why did compressing my video make the file bigger?
A quality-based encoder does not target an exact file size. Re-encoding an already efficient source can produce a larger file. Compare the output size and quality with the original, and retain the original if the result is worse.

- Compare actual input and output bytes
- Check whether a different codec or larger output dimensions were selected
- This diagnostic does not measure bitrate
Likely causes
- Target bitrate set above the source's actual bitrate
If the original was already efficiently encoded at a lower bitrate than your compression target, re-encoding at a higher setting only adds size.

Try a smaller output preset on a copy, then check the generated size and quality. Re-encoding can lose detail and does not guarantee a smaller file or platform acceptance. This tool accepts files up to 100 MB. For a larger source, export a smaller copy in your local editor first.
