Workflow

Turn a subtitle file into a clean transcript

Updated 3 steps

Short answer

Turn a caption file into usable text, and check the captions themselves for the timing problems that make them hard to read.

The decision that matters: Whether the captions are worth reusing as-is. If reading speed is above roughly 20 characters per second, the text was written for a machine, not a reader.

Step by step

  1. Check the caption file first

Reading speed, overlaps and over-long lines tell you whether the source captions are usable.

  2. Fix the timing if it drifts

A constant offset is fixable in one pass; progressive drift is a frame-rate mismatch and is not.

    Shift subtitle timing →

  3. Convert to the format you need

Browser players need VTT; most editors and upload forms want SRT.

Limits to know

  • These tools read the caption file only. They cannot generate captions from audio.
  • Formatting tags are stripped from the statistics but preserved in conversions.
