Processing failures

Instagram Reel stuck uploading or processing? Fix it in order

Updated 5 fixes4 sources

Short answer

A Reel that sits on Uploading, Preparing or Processing is usually waiting on the connection, a file Instagram has to convert first (HDR, high frame rate, very long or very large), or an app that needs restarting. Keep the app open on Wi-Fi for a few minutes, then restart it; if the same file stalls again, export a 1080×1920, 30 fps, H.264 MP4 copy and post that.

Key takeaways

  • Keep Instagram open on a stable connection: on iPhone, apps get limited time to keep uploading in the background, which is why Instagram asks you to keep it open.
  • Instagram's troubleshooting order: update the app and phone, restart, compare Wi-Fi and mobile data, then delete and reinstall (Instagram Help).
  • Files inside Instagram's API limits post most reliably: MP4 or MOV, H.264 or HEVC, AAC, 23 to 60 fps, up to 1920 px wide, 25 Mbps, 15 minutes and 300 MB.
  • HDR, 4K, 120 fps and very long clips need more conversion on the phone before upload; a 1080 × 1920, 30 fps H.264 copy usually goes through.
  • Deleting and re-posting the same Reel can look like duplicate content to recommendations; fix the file first, then post once.

Fix it step by step

  1. Keep the app open on Wi-Fi

Instagram's troubleshooting starts with comparing Wi-Fi and mobile data. Switching apps or locking the phone can pause the upload; leave Instagram open until it finishes.

  2. Update, restart and free storage

Instagram asks you to run the latest app and OS version, then restart the phone, then reinstall if needed (your photos and profile stay on Instagram). Keep a few GB free: the app writes a temporary copy of the video while preparing it.

  3. Re-export the video to Instagram's spec

Instagram's API spec for Reels lists MOV or MP4, H.264 or HEVC, 23-60 fps, AAC audio up to 48 kHz and up to 300 MB. HDR clips, 120 fps slow-motion files and screen recordings with variable frame rate are the files most likely to stall. Export an SDR 1080×1920, 30 fps, H.264 MP4 and post that copy.

  4. If it posted but shows black, give it time

After the upload, Instagram still creates the playback versions. A Reel can show a blank tile for a short time; refresh your profile before deleting and re-posting, which can create a duplicate.

  5. Report it if nothing works

If the same file posts from another phone, the problem is your device or app install. Use Report a problem in Instagram's Help settings and describe the file (length, size, frame rate).

A Reel file that uploads without conversion problems

Size1080 × 1920 px (9:16) · Instagram accepts 1.91:1 to 9:16, minimum 720 px
Frame rate30 fps, constant · minimum 30 fps per Instagram's Reels help
Codec / containerH.264 in MP4, AAC audio
ColorSDR
File sizewell under 300 MB · API limit; the app accepts larger files

How to cancel a stuck Reel upload

A Reel that is still uploading appears at the top of your feed with its progress. Tap the options there to cancel or discard it, then retry from your drafts or gallery. If the post shows as failed, use Retry once on a better connection; if it fails again, export a new copy instead of retrying the same file.

Instagram's video limits, Reel vs Story

Instagram does not publish limits for the app itself, but its publishing API does, and files inside these limits are the ones that post most reliably from any route.

Re-export a Reel that will not upload

If one clip keeps stalling while others post, make a clean copy that sits well inside Instagram's limits.

  • Constant 30 fps, 1080 × 1920, H.264, AAC stereo: ffmpeg -i in.mov -vf "scale=1080:1920:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1080:1920:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,fps=30" -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -maxrate 20M -bufsize 40M -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 48000 -ac 2 -movflags +faststart out.mp4
  • -movflags +faststart puts the moov atom at the front of the file, which Instagram's API requires.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p gives 4:2:0 chroma, and fps=30 makes the frame rate constant.

Basic Instagram fixes, in the order that works

  1. Update Instagram from the App Store or Google Play, and update your phone's system.
  2. Restart the phone, not just the app.
  3. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data; turn Airplane mode on for 10 seconds and off again to reset the connection.
  4. Turn off any VPN for the test.
  5. iPhone: Settings → Instagram → Cellular Data on, if uploads fail away from Wi-Fi.
  6. Turn Upload at highest quality off for one test upload: a smaller file shows whether the connection is the bottleneck.
  7. Android: Settings → Apps → Instagram → Storage → Clear cache (keeps your login and drafts).
  8. iPhone: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Instagram → Offload App, then Reinstall App (keeps the app's data).
  9. Still failing for everyone you know? Check whether Instagram is having an outage before changing anything else.

Frequently asked questions

How long should an Instagram Reel take to upload?

Instagram does not publish a time. A 1080p Reel under a minute normally finishes within a minute or two on Wi-Fi; Upload at highest quality makes it slower, and HDR or long files take longer.

Will deleting and re-uploading a stuck Reel hurt reach?

Instagram does not say. Its recommendation guidance asks for original content and warns against reuploading Reels already on Instagram, so delete the stuck one before posting it again.

Why does my Reel get stuck on preparing?

Preparing happens on your phone before upload. Heavy files (HDR, 4K, 60 or 120 fps, long clips) take longest; export a 1080p 30 fps MP4 copy.

How do I cancel a stuck upload on Instagram?

Tap the options on the uploading post at the top of your feed and discard it. Then post again from your gallery or drafts once you have fixed the connection or the file.

Why is my Instagram Reel stuck uploading on iPhone?

iPhone apps get limited background time, so leaving Instagram stalls the upload. Keep the app open, turn off Low Power Mode for the upload, and use Wi-Fi.

Why is my Reel stuck at 0% or 90%?

At 0% the upload never started: check the connection and restart the app. Stuck near the end usually means the file is too large or unusual; post a 1080 × 1920, 30 fps H.264 copy.
