What is WebM?
Short answer
An open, web-native video container - typically VP9 or AV1 video with Opus audio - built for smaller files on the open web.
Key takeaways
- WebM is Google's open, royalty-free video format: VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Vorbis or Opus audio.
- Browsers play it natively and browser recorders save it, but phones, editors and upload forms often do not.
- Converting WebM to MP4 means re-encoding the video to H.264 and the audio to AAC.
- WebM supports transparent video, used for stickers and web overlays.
WebM explained
WebM was built by Google specifically for royalty-free, efficient web video. It produces smaller files than MP4 at similar visual quality, which makes it a good choice for embedding video on your own site, but only a couple of social platforms (YouTube being the main one) accept it as a direct upload.
Converting a WebM to MP4 (or back) is a genuine re-encode, not a fast container swap - both are lossy formats, so keep the original source if you might need to convert again later.
How WebM came about
Google announced WebM in May 2010, shortly after buying On2 Technologies, to give the web an open, royalty-free video format for the new HTML5 video element. It started as VP8 video with Vorbis audio in a restricted form of the Matroska container. VP9 and Opus were added in 2013, and AV1 can be carried as well.
What a WebM file contains
| Part | Allowed in WebM |
|---|---|
| Container | A subset of Matroska (MKV), with the .webm extension |
| Video | VP8, VP9 or AV1 |
| Audio | Vorbis or Opus |
| Captions | WebVTT text tracks |
| Transparency | Alpha channel with VP8 or VP9 (used for stickers and overlays) |
Why browser recordings are WebM
The MediaRecorder API that screen recorders, web cameras and meeting tools use in Chrome, Edge and Firefox writes WebM with VP8 or VP9 and Opus by default, because those browsers can encode it without licensing fees. Safari's MediaRecorder writes MP4 instead. That is why a recording made in a browser tab often arrives as a .webm that a phone gallery or upload form will not open.
Can you upload WebM?
| Platform | Status | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok | Partly | Yes through the TikTok Content Posting API - native upload support depends on the surface. |
| Instagram Reels | Not documented | WebM is not in Instagram's published video specs, which list MOV and MP4. Convert to MP4 before uploading. |
| Instagram Feed | Not documented | WebM is not in Instagram's published video specs, which list MOV and MP4. Convert to MP4 before uploading. |
| YouTube Shorts | Accepted | Yes - WebM is on YouTube's own list of supported upload formats. |
| X (Twitter) | Not accepted | WebM is not listed for X Media Studio uploads. |
| Facebook Reels | Unclear | Current WEBM support for Facebook video uploads has not been reverified. |
| Not accepted | No - WebM isn't in Pinterest's accepted list on either the app or the web. |
WebM vs MP4
| WebM | MP4 | |
|---|---|---|
| Video codecs | VP8, VP9, AV1 | H.264, HEVC, AV1 and others |
| Audio codecs | Vorbis, Opus | AAC, MP3, Opus and others |
| Licensing | Open, royalty-free | Container is an ISO standard; H.264/HEVC are licensed codecs |
| Browser playback | All modern browsers | All modern browsers |
| Phones, editors, upload forms | Patchy | Near universal |
| Best for | Web playback, browser recordings | Uploading and sharing |
WebM vs MKV
WebM is a restricted profile of Matroska (MKV): the same container structure, limited to web codecs (VP8, VP9, AV1, Vorbis, Opus and WebVTT captions) so that every browser can play any valid WebM. MKV allows almost any codec and many tracks, which makes it better for archives but unplayable in browsers.
Using WebM on a website
Serve WebM and MP4 together and let the browser pick: a <video> element with a <source> for the VP9 or AV1 WebM first and an H.264 MP4 second. Browsers that cannot play the WebM fall back to the MP4. For transparent animations, VP9 WebM with alpha works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox; Safari needs HEVC with alpha in a MOV.
How to open a WebM file
- Drag it into Chrome, Firefox or Edge; Safari plays most WebM files in current versions.
- Windows 10 and 11 play WebM in Media Player with the Web Media Extensions, preinstalled on most PCs.
- On a Mac, QuickTime Player does not open WebM; use a browser, VLC or IINA.
- On a phone, VLC opens it; most galleries do not.
Advantages and drawbacks of WebM
Advantages
- Open and royalty-free
- Small files with VP9 or AV1
- Plays natively in browsers
- Supports transparency
Drawbacks
- Poor support in phone galleries, Apple apps and video editors
- Rejected by most social upload forms
- VP9 and AV1 encode more slowly than H.264
How to convert WebM to MP4
VP8, VP9 and Opus are not what MP4 players and platforms expect, so converting WebM means re-encoding the video to H.264 and the audio to AAC. Our WebM to MP4 converter does this in your browser. With FFmpeg: ffmpeg -i in.webm -c:v libx264 -crf 20 -c:a aac -movflags +faststart out.mp4

Frequently asked questions
What is a WebM file?
WebM is an open, royalty-free media file format designed for the web. A WebM file holds VP8 or VP9 video (AV1 is also used) and Vorbis or Opus audio, in a structure based on the Matroska (MKV) container.
Why are my recordings saved as WebM?
Browser-based recorders, screen capture extensions and many web apps write WebM because browsers can encode it natively. The file plays in browsers but often not in phone galleries, older editors or upload forms that expect MP4.
Is WebM better than MP4?
Neither is better in general. WebM is open and well suited to browsers; MP4 with H.264 plays almost everywhere and is what most platforms recommend for uploads. For social media, convert WebM to MP4 unless the platform lists WebM.
Can I upload WebM to Instagram or TikTok?
YouTube lists WebM as a supported format. The TikTok API accepts WebM; Instagram does not document it, so convert to MP4 (H.264, AAC) first. The table below shows each platform with its source.
Is WebM safe?
Yes. It is a media format like MP4; it cannot run code. As with any file, be careful only about where it came from.
Is WebM higher quality than MP4?
Quality depends on codec and bitrate. A VP9 or AV1 WebM can match an H.264 MP4 at a smaller size, but an MP4 with HEVC or AV1 does the same, so the container itself does not decide quality.
