What is AAC audio?

Updated 4 sources

Short answer

Advanced Audio Coding: the lossy audio codec inside most MP4 videos, and the audio format YouTube and Instagram ask for in uploads.

Key takeaways

  • AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is the lossy audio codec in most MP4 videos, Apple Music and YouTube.
  • It sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate.
  • Upload AAC-LC at 48 kHz: YouTube recommends 384 kbps stereo; the Instagram API lists 128 kbps.
  • .m4a files are usually AAC in an MP4 container.

AAC explained

AAC is part of the MPEG-4 standard and was designed to give better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate. It has several profiles; AAC-LC (low complexity) is the everyday one and the one YouTube names in its upload recommendations.

For social video the audio rarely needs thought: export AAC at 48 kHz in stereo and the platforms re-encode it anyway. If an upload is rejected or plays without sound, check the audio codec first; re-exporting with AAC is the usual fix.

History of AAC

AAC was developed by Fraunhofer IIS, AT&T Bell Labs, Dolby, Sony and Nokia as the successor to MP3, standardized in 1997 as part of MPEG-2 and extended in MPEG-4 Audio in 1999. Apple made it mainstream: the iTunes Store sold AAC files from 2003, and Apple Music still streams 256 kbps AAC. Today it is the default audio in MP4 video, YouTube, iPhone recordings and Bluetooth audio on Apple devices.

How AAC compresses sound

Like MP3, AAC is a perceptual codec: it splits the sound into frequency bands with a transform (the MDCT), uses a model of human hearing to find sounds that louder ones mask, and spends bits only where you would notice. AAC's improvements over MP3 include finer frequency resolution, better handling of sharp transients such as drum hits, more sample rates (8 to 96 kHz) and up to 48 channels, which is why it sounds better at the same bitrate.

AAC files and how to open them

  • .m4a: AAC in an MP4 container, the usual file from iTunes, Apple Music downloads and voice memos.
  • .aac: a raw AAC stream (ADTS) with no container; plays in most players but carries little metadata.
  • .mp4 and .mov: AAC as the audio track of a video.
  • Every phone, Mac and Windows 10 or 11 PC plays AAC; VLC plays every variant.

How to convert to or from AAC

  • To MP3 for an old device or a podcast host that wants MP3: re-encode at 192 kbps or more.
  • To AAC from WAV or FLAC: 256 kbps stereo AAC-LC is indistinguishable from the source for nearly everyone.
  • Avoid AAC to AAC re-encodes; every lossy pass loses a little more.
  • With FFmpeg: ffmpeg -i in.wav -c:a aac -b:a 256k out.m4a (Apple's encoder and the Fraunhofer FDK encoder are slightly better at low bitrates).

Frequently asked questions

What is AAC audio?

Advanced Audio Coding, a lossy audio codec defined in the MPEG-4 standard. It is the usual audio track in MP4 video and was designed to give better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate.

What AAC settings does YouTube recommend?

AAC-LC (or Opus) at a 48 kHz sample rate, stereo or stereo plus 5.1, with recommended bitrates of 128 kbps for mono, 384 kbps for stereo and 512 kbps for 5.1.

What audio does Instagram accept?

The Instagram API asks for AAC, a 48 kHz sample rate at most, mono or stereo, at 128 kbps.

Is AAC better than MP3?

At the same bitrate AAC generally sounds better, which is why video formats use it. MP3 is still common for audio-only files such as podcasts.

Is AAC lossless?

No, AAC is lossy. Apple's lossless format, ALAC, also uses the .m4a extension, which causes confusion; MediaInfo or our file inspector shows which codec is inside.

What does AAC mean on Bluetooth headphones?

The phone sends audio to the headphones compressed as AAC. iPhones use AAC for Bluetooth audio; many Android phones also support it alongside SBC, aptX and LDAC.
