What is MP4?

Updated 5 sources

Short answer

The most widely compatible video container, accepted by every social platform, phone and editor.

Key takeaways

  • MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a container that usually holds H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio.
  • It is the most compatible video file: every phone, browser, editor and platform opens it.
  • Put the moov index at the front ("fast start") for uploads and streaming.
  • MP4 is not lossy or lossless itself; the codecs inside decide quality.

MP4 explained

An .mp4 file almost always holds H.264 (or increasingly HEVC) video with AAC audio. That combination has hardware decoding built into practically every device made in the last fifteen years, which is why MP4 plays everywhere without taxing the CPU.

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is a common delivery choice. The container alone is not a guarantee: check the destination codec, duration and file-size requirements.

Inside an MP4 file

An MP4 is built from nested boxes (Apple calls them atoms), each with a four-letter name and a size. The three that matter:

  • ftyp: the file type box at the start, saying which MP4 brand the file follows.
  • moov: the movie box, the index. It lists every track, its codec, duration, rotation and where each frame is stored.
  • mdat: the media data box, the actual compressed video and audio.

If moov sits at the end, a player or upload server must read the whole file before it can start. "Fast start" or "web optimized" export moves it to the front, which is what YouTube and the Instagram API ask for. Fragmented MP4 instead splits the index into many small moof boxes so the file can be streamed in pieces (DASH, HLS and CMAF).

What an MP4 can carry

StreamCommon codecs in MP4
VideoH.264, HEVC, AV1; older MPEG-4 Part 2; VP9 in some streaming files
AudioAAC (by far the most common), MP3, Opus, ALAC, AC-3 and E-AC-3
SubtitlesMPEG-4 Timed Text (tx3g), shown as a selectable track
OtherChapters, cover art, rotation and location metadata

History of MP4

The MP4 file format was first defined in 2001 and published on its own as MPEG-4 Part 14 (ISO/IEC 14496-14) in 2003. It is based on the ISO base media file format, which itself was derived from Apple's QuickTime format, so MP4 and MOV share the same box structure. That shared design is why converting between the two is often a fast remux.

Why an MP4 will not play or upload

  • The codec inside is not supported: HEVC on an old PC, AV1 on an old phone, or ProRes and PCM in a renamed file. Check with a file inspector.
  • The recording was interrupted and the moov index was never written, so players cannot read the file. Recovery tools can sometimes rebuild it from a working clip from the same camera.
  • The file breaks a platform limit: length, size, frame rate or resolution.
  • Variable frame rate from phone or screen recordings confuses some editors; convert to a constant frame rate.
  • Copy protection on purchased .m4v or .mp4 files.

How to open an MP4 file

  • Windows 10 and 11: Media Player (or Movies & TV) plays H.264 MP4s. HEVC MP4s need the HEVC Video Extensions.
  • Mac, iPhone and iPad: QuickTime Player, Photos and Files play them natively.
  • Android: the built-in gallery or Google Photos.
  • Any browser: drag the file into a tab.
  • VLC plays almost any MP4 on every system, whatever codec is inside.

Advantages and drawbacks of MP4

Advantages

  • The most compatible video file: phones, browsers, TVs, editors and every major platform
  • An ISO standard, not tied to one company
  • Supports streaming (fast start and fragmented MP4)
  • Holds metadata, chapters and subtitle tracks

Drawbacks

  • Cannot hold every codec: ProRes and PCM audio belong in MOV
  • Fewer audio and subtitle options than MKV
  • An interrupted recording can leave an unplayable file if moov was never written
  • The extension hides which codec is inside

How to convert to or from MP4

  • MOV, MKV or M4V with H.264 or HEVC: remux to MP4 without re-encoding; it takes seconds.
  • WebM, AVI, FLV: re-encode to H.264 and AAC in MP4.
  • Audio only: extract to MP3, M4A or WAV.
  • Our converters run in your browser, so the file is not uploaded anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

What is an MP4 file?

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a container file that holds video, audio and metadata. Most MP4s carry H.264 video and AAC audio, which is why MP4 plays on almost every phone, browser and editor.

MP4 or MOV?

For uploading, MP4: YouTube recommends it and every platform in our registry documents it. MOV is Apple’s QuickTime container, ideal for editing, and is also accepted by YouTube and the Instagram API.

What is the moov atom and why does it matter?

The moov atom is the index of an MP4 file. YouTube and the Instagram API both ask for it at the front of the file ("fast start"), so processing can begin before the whole file is read. Most export tools have a "web optimized" or "fast start" option for this.

Why does my MP4 not upload?

The extension says MP4 but the codec inside may not be accepted (ProRes, AV1, PCM audio), or the file breaks a limit such as size, length or frame rate. Check the codec first.

Is MP4 the same as MPEG-4?

MP4 is one part of the MPEG-4 standard: Part 14, the file format. MPEG-4 also includes codecs, such as Part 2 video (DivX, Xvid) and Part 10 (H.264).

Is MP4 lossy?

The container is neither lossy nor lossless; the codecs inside decide. Almost every MP4 holds lossy H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio.

Can an MP4 be only audio?

Yes. Audio-only MP4 files usually use the .m4a extension, but some apps save them as .mp4.
