What is MOV?
Short answer
Apple's QuickTime container - the default export from iPhone camera rolls and Final Cut Pro.
Key takeaways
- MOV is Apple's QuickTime container, used by iPhones, Macs and pro editors.
- iPhone MOVs hold HEVC (High Efficiency) or H.264 (Most Compatible) with AAC audio.
- MOV and MP4 share the same structure, so H.264 or HEVC MOVs convert to MP4 losslessly in seconds.
- ProRes MOVs are editing masters: re-encode them to H.264 before posting.
MOV explained
MOV is structurally close to MP4 - MP4 was derived from the same QuickTime format - and in the common case an iPhone MOV holds exactly the same H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio an MP4 would. That's why converting MOV to MP4 is often just a container change with no re-encoding involved.
Most major platforms accept MOV directly today, though a few (see the per-platform format pages below) either don't document it or restrict it to certain upload surfaces.
How a MOV file is built
MOV is the QuickTime File Format, introduced by Apple with QuickTime in 1991. A MOV file is a set of atoms: a moov atom with the tracks, their timing and an edit list, and an mdat atom with the media. Each track can use a different codec, and edit lists let a file reference parts of its media without copying them, which is why editors like it.
When ISO built the MPEG-4 file format it started from QuickTime, so MP4 is in effect a standardized cousin of MOV. Most MOV files that carry H.264 or HEVC with AAC can become MP4s with a lossless remux.
Codecs commonly found in MOV
| Source | Video | Audio |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone, High Efficiency | HEVC | AAC |
| iPhone, Most Compatible | H.264 | AAC |
| iPhone Pro with ProRes on | Apple ProRes 422 HQ | AAC or PCM |
| Final Cut Pro, Premiere, Resolve masters | ProRes, DNxHR, H.264 | PCM or AAC |
| Screen recordings on a Mac | H.264 or HEVC | AAC |
| Motion graphics with transparency | ProRes 4444 or Apple Animation | None or PCM |
Can you upload MOV?
| Platform | Status | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok | Accepted | Yes - TikTok documents MOV uploads through its Content Posting API. |
| Instagram Reels | Accepted | Yes - Instagram accepts MOV as well as MP4 for Reels. |
| Instagram Feed | Accepted | Yes - Instagram accepts MOV as well as MP4 for feed videos. |
| YouTube Shorts | Accepted | Yes - YouTube (and Shorts) accepts MOV uploads directly. |
| X (Twitter) | Partly | Yes in X Media Studio - MOV support in other X upload surfaces is not established here. |
| Facebook Reels | Unclear | Current MOV support for Facebook video uploads has not been reverified. |
| Partly | Partially - MOV works from the Pinterest app, but not on the web uploader. | |
| Accepted | Yes - LinkedIn documents MOV for organic video on desktop, iOS and Android. | |
| Snapchat | Unclear | MOV support for Spotlight is not established by the linked Snapchat help page. |
| Threads | Unclear | Current MOV upload support on Threads has not been reverified. |
Why a MOV file will not play
- On Windows: the video is HEVC and the HEVC Video Extensions are missing, or it is ProRes, which the built-in players do not decode. VLC plays both.
- On Android: the gallery may not decode HEVC or ProRes; Google Photos or VLC usually can.
- In a browser: Chrome and Edge play H.264 MOVs, but HEVC MOVs only with hardware support.
- In an editor: ProRes RAW, Log or very high bit-rate MOVs may need a newer version or a codec plugin.

MOV vs MP4
| MOV | MP4 | |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | Apple (QuickTime) | ISO standard (MPEG-4 Part 14) |
| Codecs | Also ProRes, PCM, Animation, alpha video | H.264, HEVC, AV1, AAC; no ProRes |
| Best for | Recording and editing, especially on Apple | Sharing, streaming and uploading |
| Windows playback | Usually fine for H.264; ProRes needs extra software | Built in |
| File size | Same as MP4 for the same codec; huge for ProRes | Same as MOV for the same codec |
How to open a MOV file
- Mac, iPhone and iPad: QuickTime Player, Photos and Files.
- Windows 10 and 11: Media Player plays most H.264 MOVs; HEVC MOVs from iPhones need HEVC Video Extensions. VLC plays almost all of them.
- Skip QuickTime 7 for Windows: Apple no longer supports it, so it gets no security updates, and Apple notes that Windows itself has played H.264 and AAC since 2009.
- Android: Google Photos or VLC.
Advantages and drawbacks of MOV
Advantages
- Holds editing codecs (ProRes) and transparency
- Native on every Apple device and in pro editors
- Edit lists and multiple tracks suit editing workflows
- Accepted by YouTube and the Instagram API
Drawbacks
- ProRes MOVs are huge and rejected by many upload forms
- Less universal than MP4 on Windows, Android and smart TVs
- Some platforms list only MP4
How to convert MOV to MP4
- If the MOV holds H.264 or HEVC with AAC, remux: our MOV to MP4 converter copies the streams in seconds with no quality loss.
- If it holds ProRes or PCM audio, it must be re-encoded to H.264 or HEVC with AAC.
- On a Mac, QuickTime Player > File > Export As also writes a compatible file; on iPhone, Most Compatible recording avoids the issue.

Frequently asked questions
What is a MOV file?
MOV is Apple's QuickTime container. iPhones and Final Cut Pro save MOV files, usually with H.264 or HEVC video, and editing exports may use ProRes.
Is MOV the same quality as MP4?
Quality depends on the codec inside, not the container. An H.264 MOV and an H.264 MP4 at the same bitrate look the same; a ProRes MOV is far larger and higher quality, but many platforms do not accept ProRes.
Why does my MOV file not upload?
Usually because of what is inside: ProRes video, PCM audio or more than two audio channels. Re-export as H.264 or HEVC with AAC audio, or convert to MP4.
Why are iPhone videos MOV?
Apple records in its own QuickTime container. Since iOS 11 the video inside is HEVC by default (High Efficiency); choose Most Compatible in Settings > Camera > Formats for H.264.
Does converting MOV to MP4 reduce quality?
Not if the codecs are already H.264 or HEVC with AAC: a remux copies them unchanged. Only ProRes or other editing codecs need a lossy re-encode.
