Does Instagram support MOV? Yes, but some MOV files still fail

Apple's QuickTime container - the default export from iPhone camera rolls and Final Cut Pro

Yes

Yes. Instagram accepts MOV as well as MP4 for Reels, feed videos and Stories: Meta's Instagram video specs list MP4 and MOV, and Instagram's publishing API names "MOV or MP4". When a MOV fails, uploads without sound or looks wrong, the container is not the problem; what is inside it is: ProRes video, uncompressed (PCM) audio, more than two audio channels or edit lists. Re-export with H.264 or HEVC video and AAC stereo audio and either extension works.

Fix it step by step

  1. 1. See what is inside your MOV

The extension does not tell you the codec. Check the video codec, audio codec, frame rate and size before converting anything.

    Inspect your file →

  2. 2. Replace ProRes with H.264 or HEVC

Instagram's API spec lists HEVC or H.264 video, progressive scan, 4:2:0 chroma. In your editor choose H.264 (or HEVC) instead of ProRes; Meta's ad specs also ask for a fixed frame rate and square pixels.

  3. 3. Use AAC audio, mono or stereo

The spec is AAC, at most 48 kHz, 1 or 2 channels, 128 kbps. Uncompressed PCM or a multichannel mix is the usual reason a MOV uploads without sound.

  4. 4. Stay inside the API limits when posting from an app

Schedulers and other apps post through Instagram's API: MOV or MP4 with the moov atom at the front, 23-60 fps, at most 1920 px wide, 25 Mbps video, 3 seconds to 15 minutes, 300 MB.

  5. 5. Convert to MP4 if a MOV still fails

Renaming .mov to .mp4 changes nothing inside the file. A real conversion rewrites the container (dropping edit lists) and can re-encode the streams.

  6. 6. If it uploads but looks soft

Format is not the cause. Check the upload quality setting, resolution and HDR instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is MOV or MP4 better for Instagram?

Neither is better by itself. Both are accepted; what matters is H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio inside. MP4 is the safer choice when a third-party app does the posting.

Is a MOV file the same as an MP4?

They are closely related containers that can hold the same H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio. A MOV from an editor often holds ProRes and PCM audio instead, which is what causes trouble.

Can I just change .mov to .mp4?

No. Renaming changes only the label; the codecs and any edit lists stay. Convert or re-export the file instead.

Why does my MOV upload to Instagram with no sound?

The audio track is usually uncompressed PCM or has more than two channels. Instagram's spec is AAC, mono or stereo, up to 48 kHz. Re-export the audio as AAC stereo.
