What is H.265 (HEVC)?

Updated 7 sources

Short answer

A newer codec that roughly halves file size versus H.264 at similar quality, at the cost of narrower playback support.

Key takeaways

  • HEVC (H.265) is the successor to H.264 and makes files about half the size at the same quality.
  • iPhones record HEVC by default (High Efficiency); Windows needs the HEVC Video Extensions to play it.
  • YouTube and the Instagram API accept HEVC uploads; H.264 stays the safest choice everywhere else.
  • Main 10 HEVC carries most HDR video.

H.265 (HEVC) explained

HEVC is what recent iPhones record in by default, usually inside a .mov or .mp4 container. The efficiency gain is real, but decoding support is less universal than H.264 - some Windows PCs, older Android phones and some upload pipelines handle it poorly or not at all, which is the usual cause of "this file won't play" complaints about recent iPhone footage.

Re-encoding an HEVC file to H.264 fixes most playback complaints at the cost of a somewhat larger file - a reasonable trade when a file needs to go somewhere you don't control.

How HEVC improves on H.264

  • Bigger, flexible blocks: coding tree units up to 64 × 64 pixels, split as finely as needed, instead of fixed 16 × 16 macroblocks. Large flat areas such as sky cost far fewer bits.
  • More precise prediction: 35 intra prediction modes against 9 in H.264, and better motion vector prediction.
  • Extra filtering: sample adaptive offset (SAO) after the deblocking filter reduces ringing around edges.
  • Parallel tools (tiles and wavefront processing) so multi-core chips can encode and decode faster.

The result is roughly half the bitrate of H.264 for the same visual quality, with the biggest gains at 4K. The price is more computing power, which is why HEVC relies on hardware decoders.

History and licensing

HEVC was developed by the Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (ITU-T and ISO/IEC MPEG) and first approved in April 2013, as ITU-T H.265 and MPEG-H Part 2. Apple adopted it in 2017 (iOS 11), making it the default recording format of iPhones from the iPhone 7 on.

Unlike H.264, HEVC patents are split between several pools (Access Advance and Via LA) and individual companies. That uncertainty slowed browser support for years and is one reason Google, Mozilla and others built the royalty-free AV1 instead.

HEVC encoders

  • x265: the open-source software encoder in FFmpeg and HandBrake; slow presets give the best quality per bit.
  • Hardware: NVIDIA NVENC (GTX 900 series and later), Intel Quick Sync (6th-gen Core and later), AMD VCE/VCN and Apple VideoToolbox on every recent Mac and iPhone. Much faster, slightly larger files.
  • Apple devices encode HEVC in hardware when recording and exporting from Photos, iMovie and Final Cut Pro.
  • With FFmpeg: ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -c:v libx265 -crf 24 -preset medium -tag:v hvc1 -c:a aac out.mp4 (the hvc1 tag lets Apple players open the file).

HEVC, 10-bit and HDR

HEVC's Main 10 profile stores 10 bits per channel, which keeps smooth gradients in skies and HDR highlights. HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision video from phones and streaming services is almost always Main 10 HEVC. If an HEVC file looks washed out or too bright, it is probably HDR being shown as SDR; see HDR video for the fix.

Where HEVC plays

Device or softwareHEVC playback
iPhone, iPad, MacYes, built in (iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra or later)
AndroidMost phones since about 2016, with hardware decoders
Windows 10 and 11Needs the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store (preinstalled on some PCs)
SafariYes
Chrome and EdgeWhen the device has a hardware HEVC decoder (Chrome since version 107)
FirefoxLimited; depends on version and platform
VLCYes, on every platform

Advantages and drawbacks of HEVC

Advantages

  • About half the file size of H.264 at the same quality
  • Built for 4K and 10-bit HDR
  • Hardware support in nearly every phone and recent GPU
  • Accepted by YouTube and the Instagram API

Drawbacks

  • Patchy playback on Windows and in some browsers
  • Complicated patent licensing
  • Slower to encode in software
  • Not documented by every platform; H.264 is safer for uploads

How to open or convert HEVC

  • On Windows, install HEVC Video Extensions, or open the file in VLC.
  • To make iPhone record H.264 instead, choose Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible.
  • To convert to H.264 for a platform or an older computer, re-encode with our video compressor (it writes H.264 MP4) or with FFmpeg: ffmpeg -i in.mov -c:v libx264 -crf 20 -c:a aac out.mp4

Frequently asked questions

What is HEVC?

HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), also called H.265, is the successor to H.264. It compresses video more efficiently, so a file at the same quality is smaller, which matters most at 4K and for HDR.

Does Instagram support HEVC?

Yes for API publishing: the Instagram API spec lists "HEVC or H264" video in MOV or MP4 for reels, stories and videos. Instagram publishes no codec list for app uploads, so H.264 stays the safest choice if a file fails.

Does YouTube accept HEVC?

Yes. YouTube lists HEVC (H.265) among its supported upload formats, although its recommended upload settings use H.264.

Why does my HEVC video not play on some computers?

Playback needs an HEVC decoder. Many phones record HEVC, but some browsers, older editors and operating systems need an extra decoder or hardware support. Converting to H.264 makes the file play almost anywhere, at the cost of a larger file.

Is HEVC the same as H.265?

Yes. HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) is the name used by ISO/IEC MPEG; H.265 is the ITU-T number for the same standard.

What comes after HEVC?

H.266, also called VVC (Versatile Video Coding), approved in 2020. It aims for about half the bitrate of HEVC, but devices and platforms barely support it yet. AV1 is the royalty-free alternative already in wide use.

Does converting HEVC to H.264 lose quality?

A little, as with any re-encode, and the H.264 file is larger. Use a high quality setting (CRF 18-20) and convert once from the original.
