Color problems

TikTok video darker or a different color after posting? Fix HDR

Updated 5 fixes2 sources

Short answer

A TikTok that looks darker, grayer or more saturated than your original almost always went through a color conversion: an HDR clip (iPhone default) was mapped to standard range, or the export was not tagged as Rec. 709, so the player guessed. Export an SDR, Rec. 709 file from your editor and compare it with the posted video on the same phone at the same brightness.

Key takeaways

  • Washed-out or darker TikToks are almost always a color conversion: an HDR clip mapped to standard range, or an export without Rec. 709 tags.
  • iPhones record HDR (Dolby Vision) by default; turn off Settings → Camera → Record Video → HDR Video for clips you plan to post.
  • TikTok accepts H.265 but does not document HDR playback, so export SDR, Rec. 709, 8-bit H.264 to control the result.
  • Do not mix HDR and SDR clips in one edit; the editor converts one of them and the cut looks uneven.
  • Compare on the same phone at the same brightness; auto-brightness and Night Shift change what you see.

Why TikTok videos look washed out or faded

HDR video stores a wider range of brightness and color than standard video. When it is shown on a standard screen or converted by an app, it has to be mapped down, and if that mapping is done by guesswork the result is flat, gray and faded. iPhones record HDR by default, so this is the most common cause.

The second cause is missing color tags. An SDR export that does not say it is Rec. 709 leaves the player to guess the gamma and colors, and different apps guess differently. That is also why a video can look washed out in QuickTime or Safari on a Mac but fine on the phone: the players interpret the same file differently.

Fix it step by step

  1. Turn HDR off for clips you post

iPhones record HDR video by default. Where a platform can't show HDR, it converts the clip to standard range; YouTube's HDR help describes exactly this SDR down-conversion, and a converted clip rarely matches your preview. Export an SDR copy in your editor, or turn off Settings → Camera → Record Video → HDR Video before filming.

  2. Export in Rec. 709

In your editor set the timeline and export color space to Rec. 709 (SDR). Untagged files leave each player to guess, which is why the same file looks different on a phone and a computer.

  3. Don't mix HDR and SDR clips

If one clip in the timeline is HDR, editors may treat the whole project differently. Convert every HDR clip to SDR before editing.

  4. Compare fairly

Open your export and the posted TikTok on the same phone at the same brightness, with auto-brightness and night shift off. Then check on a second device.

  5. Skip in-app enhance and filters

Post once without filters or enhance to rule them out.

Convert an HDR clip to SDR for TikTok

  • iPhone: turn off Settings → Camera → Record Video → HDR Video for future clips; convert clips you already have in an editor with an SDR (Rec. 709) export.
  • In CapCut, Premiere or DaVinci Resolve: set the project or timeline to Rec. 709 SDR and export H.264 8-bit.
  • With FFmpeg (needs a build with zscale): ffmpeg -i in.mov -vf "zscale=t=linear:npl=100,format=gbrpf32le,zscale=p=bt709,tonemap=tonemap=hable:desat=0,zscale=t=bt709:m=bt709:r=tv,format=yuv420p" -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -color_primaries bt709 -color_trc bt709 -colorspace bt709 -c:a copy out.mp4

YouTube is the one major platform that documents HDR uploads in detail, which shows how much metadata HDR needs to display correctly; TikTok does not publish HDR requirements, so SDR is the predictable choice.

Washed out and blurry at the same time?

Color and sharpness problems often arrive together on TikTok, because both come from the same conversion. If your video also lost detail, the upload itself was the weak point: a heavily compressed file, the wrong frame size, or an upload that went out at reduced quality. Fix color with an SDR export, then follow the quality settings below.

Does uploading 4K or 60 fps fix washed-out TikToks?

No. Resolution and frame rate do not change color. A 4K HDR clip looks exactly as washed out as a 1080p HDR clip once it is converted. TikTok accepts files up to 4096 px and 60 fps, but the reliable fix for color is an SDR export, and for sharpness a clean 1080 × 1920 file.

Frequently asked questions

Why does TikTok make my video darker?

Usually HDR-to-SDR conversion or an untagged color space. Export SDR Rec. 709 and the posted video will match your preview.

Why do my iPhone videos look washed out on TikTok?

They are recorded in HDR (Dolby Vision). Turn off HDR Video or export an SDR copy before posting.

Does TikTok support HDR?

TikTok does not document HDR playback for regular posts. Treat it as SDR and export SDR.

Why do my TikTok videos look faded?

Usually an HDR clip was converted to standard range with a flat result. Export an SDR, Rec. 709 copy and turn off HDR Video in the iPhone camera settings for clips you post.

Why does TikTok change the color of my video?

TikTok converts every upload, and HDR or untagged videos are converted by guesswork. Give it an SDR Rec. 709 file so there is nothing to guess.

Why does my video look washed out on my Mac but fine on my phone?

Mac players such as QuickTime and Safari interpret video gamma differently from phones. Judge color on the phone you post from, and tag your export as Rec. 709.

Why does TikTok darken my videos?

An HDR clip converted to standard range often comes out darker and more contrasty. Export an SDR, Rec. 709 copy so TikTok has nothing to convert.

How do I make TikTok videos look clear and true to color?

Record in SDR (HDR Video off on iPhone), export 1080 × 1920 H.264 at 10 to 15 Mbps in Rec. 709, turn off in-app enhance and filters, and post the original over Wi-Fi.

Why is my TikTok video quality bad after posting?

TikTok re-encodes every post; a compressed, noisy or HDR source loses the most. Post a clean 1080 × 1920 SDR export with the high-quality option on if your app shows it.

Why do my TikTok videos look faded only on some phones?

Phones that support HDR may show an HDR version differently from standard screens. Post an SDR export so every viewer sees the same colors.
