How to blur a face in Premiere Pro and track it

Updated 4 steps2 min read

Short answer

Apply a blur effect (Gaussian Blur, or Mosaic for a pixelated look) to the clip, draw an ellipse mask over the face, assign the mask to the blur in Effect Controls, feather the edge, and click Track selected mask forward and backward so the blur follows the face. Adobe lists blurring faces as a typical use of mask tracking.

Checked against: Adobe Premiere (formerly Premiere Pro), 2026 releases, Windows and Mac.

Step by step: Blur + tracked mask

  1. Apply a blur

In the Effects panel search for Gaussian Blur (or Mosaic) and drag it onto the clip. Raise Blurriness until the face is unrecognisable.

  2. Draw an ellipse mask

Hold the Object Mask Tool and choose the Ellipse Mask Tool, then draw over the face in the Program Monitor.

  3. Assign the mask to the blur

In Effect Controls, drag the mask from Unassigned Masks onto the blur effect. Add Mask Feather for a soft edge.

  4. Track the face

Click Track selected mask forward and backward. Premiere tracks the mask across frames; review in the Program Monitor and fix any frames where it slips.

Questions people ask

Can Premiere Pro blur faces automatically?

Premiere tracks a mask you place on the face; Object Masking can select the person for you. Always review the result.

Gaussian Blur or Mosaic?

Both work. Mosaic reads clearly as deliberate anonymisation; Gaussian Blur looks softer.

How do I blur a license plate or logo?

Same method with a rectangle mask instead of an ellipse.
