Upload time calculator

Estimate transfer time from a file size and a connection speed, with the megabit/megabyte confusion handled for you.

Estimated upload time
1m 45s
At 70% of the quoted speed
2m 30s

Real throughput is usually below the advertised line rate.

Your speed in MB/s
2.50 MB/s
File size in megabits
2097 Mb

Calculated as: seconds = file bytes × 8 ÷ (Mbps × 1,000,000)

How it is calculated

seconds = file bytes × 8 ÷ (Mbps × 1,000,000)

Worked example with the starting values (File size: 250 MB; Upload speed: 20 Mbps): estimated upload time 1m 45s; at 70% of the quoted speed 2m 30s; your speed in mb/s 2.50 MB/s; file size in megabits 2097 Mb.

Key takeaways

  • 1m 45s for 250 MB at 20 Mbps, and 2m 30s at 70% of the quoted speed, which is closer to real life.
  • Upload speed is quoted in megabits per second; divide by 8 for megabytes per second.

Reading the estimate

The estimate divides the size in megabits by your upload speed. It assumes the connection delivers its quoted rate for the whole transfer, which it rarely does; the 70% row is the safer number.

Upload speed is usually lower than download speed, so use the upload figure from your own speed test.

Quick answers

How long does it take to upload a video?

Upload time = file size ÷ upload speed. A 1 GB file on a 20 Mbps upload takes about 1,024 × 8 ÷ 20 ≈ 410 seconds, just under 7 minutes, before the platform starts processing.

Why is upload speed lower than my internet speed?

Most home plans are asymmetric: the advertised number is download speed, and upload is often a fraction of it. Run a speed test and use the upload figure.

Why is my upload slower than this?

Quoted speeds are a ceiling. Shared connections, Wi-Fi and the destination server all lower the rate, so the 70% row is a more careful guess.
