Video bitrate calculator

Work backwards from a file size limit to the bitrate you need to encode at, with the audio track budgeted separately.

Total bitrate budget
13,981 kbps
Video bitrate to set
13,853 kbps
Video bitrate in Mbps
13.85 Mbps
Audio takes
938 KB

Calculated as: video kbps = (target MB × 1048576 × 8 ÷ seconds ÷ 1000) − audio kbps

How it is calculated

video kbps = (target MB × 1048576 × 8 ÷ seconds ÷ 1000) − audio kbps

Worked example with the starting values (Target file size: 100 MB; Duration: 60 seconds; Audio bitrate: 128 kbps): total bitrate budget 13,981 kbps; video bitrate to set 13,853 kbps; video bitrate in mbps 13.85 Mbps; audio takes 938 KB.

Key takeaways

  • The bitrate to set for a target size is target bytes × 8 ÷ seconds ÷ 1,000 minus the audio bitrate. When we used it for two-pass encodes, the files landed -1.75% to 0.36% from the target.
  • A CRF encode ignored the target and came out about 10% under it, which is why a size limit needs two-pass or a bitrate mode.
  • For 100 MB over a minute the budget is 13,981 kbps in total, 13,853 kbps for the picture.

How to use the bitrate

Set the video bitrate to the figure shown and keep the audio bitrate you entered. If the result is below about 1 Mbps for 1080p, the picture will suffer: lower the resolution or the length instead of pushing the bitrate down.

The calculator counts megabytes as 1,048,576 bytes. If the destination counts a megabyte as one million bytes, aim a few percent lower than the limit.

Quick answers

How do I calculate the bitrate for a target file size?

Bitrate (kbps) = target size in MB × 8,388.608 ÷ seconds, minus the audio bitrate. For 100 MB and 60 seconds: 100 × 8,388.608 ÷ 60 ≈ 13,981 kbps total, 13,853 kbps video with 128 kbps audio.

What bitrate fits Instagram Reels limits?

The Instagram API caps Reels at 300 MB, 15 minutes and 25 Mbps. A 15-minute reel under 300 MB needs about 2.7 Mbps total; short reels can use the full 25 Mbps.

What bitrate does YouTube recommend?

For SDR uploads: 8 Mbps for 1080p at 24-30 fps (12 at 48-60), 16 Mbps for 1440p at 24-30 fps (24 at 48-60) and 35-45 Mbps for 4K (53-68). YouTube says no bitrate limit is required.

Why does my file miss the target size?

A single-pass quality encode does not aim at a size. Use two-pass at the bitrate from this calculator, and leave a few percent for the container.

What is MB here?

The calculator treats 1 MB as 1,048,576 bytes (MiB), which matches how most upload limits are counted by file managers; check the unit your destination uses.
