Free online image tools
Short answer
Free image tools that work in your browser, with no upload: remove a background, compress an image with a slider or to an exact size in KB, convert HEIC, PNG, JPG and WebP, and make QR codes. A 3.10 MB photo became 1.60 MB at 70% quality, and 98.8 KB (762 × 769) when the target was 100 KB.

Key takeaways
- Compression by quality alone often cannot reach a small limit: it missed 3 of 6 targets for our 3.1 MB photo, so the target size tool also shrinks the picture.
- HEIC photos open anywhere: a 15 megapixel HEIC decoded in 1.4 seconds in our test.
- Converting is not always smaller: a text screenshot grew from 94.6 KB as PNG to 129 KB as JPG, while photographs shrank by about 85% to 90%.
- Everything runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and there is no account.
- Images are saved as JPEG by the compress tools and as JPG, PNG or WebP by the converters.
Measured: what the compress tools do
The browser's canvas encoder saved a 3840 × 3877 photograph (3.1 MB) at each setting. SSIM compares the result with the original at its own size, so 1.0 would be identical.
| Setting | Result | Picture | SSIM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slider 95% | 3.98 MB | 3840 × 3877 | 0.995 |
| Slider 70% (default) | 1.60 MB | 3840 × 3877 | 0.916 |
| Slider 50% | 1.22 MB | 3840 × 3877 | 0.896 |
| Target 1 MB | 999 KB | 2700 × 2726 | 0.910 |
| Target 500 KB | 495 KB | 1902 × 1920 | 0.910 |
| Target 200 KB | 203 KB | 1104 × 1115 | 0.929 |
| Target 100 KB | 98.8 KB | 762 × 769 | 0.934 |
| Target 50 KB | 50.7 KB | 506 × 510 | 0.924 |
| Target 20 KB | 20.0 KB | 306 × 309 | 0.938 |
A slider changes only the quality. A target size also changes the picture size when it must, which is why the 20 KB result is much smaller in pixels.
Measured: HEIC photos in the browser
We had no phone files we could publish, so the HEIC files were made from three public domain NASA scans with an HEVC encoder at quality 75. Decoding ran libheif compiled to WebAssembly in headless Chromium.
| Test file | Pixels | HEIC | Decode | JPG 92% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Portrait | 2122 × 2644 | 1.17 MB | 0.6 s | 860 KB |
| Document scan | 3827 × 1588 | 1.71 MB | 0.6 s | 1.28 MB |
| Photo | 3840 × 3877 | 4.35 MB | 1.4 s | 3.58 MB |
Image formats at a glance
What each format is for, from MDN's image format guide and the converters on this site.
| Format | Compression | Transparency | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG | Lossy | No transparency | Photos; the image format every platform documents |
| PNG | Lossless | Transparency supported | Screenshots, logos and graphics with text |
| WebP | Lossy or lossless | Transparency supported | Smaller images on websites; social platforms mostly document JPEG and PNG instead |
| HEIC | Lossy | Transparency supported | iPhone and iPad photos: Apple says it compresses better than JPEG at the same visual quality |
| SVG | Vector (no pixels) | Transparency supported | Logos and icons that must stay sharp at any size |
Which tool for which job
| You want to | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Make a photo lighter for a website | Compress an image | A slider, and the size is shown as you move |
| Meet a form that says "under 100 KB" | Compress to a target size | It finds the quality for you and shrinks the picture if needed |
| Open an iPhone photo on Windows | HEIC to JPG | Decodes in your browser, several files at once |
| Send a screenshot | Keep the PNG | Our text screenshot was smaller as a PNG than as a JPG |
| Put a link on a poster | QR code generator | PNG and SVG, with error correction levels |
Limits to know about
- The compress tools save JPEG; a PNG with transparency becomes a JPEG on white.
- Other browsers use their own JPEG encoders, so sizes can differ a little from the ones measured here.
- Very large images are limited by your device's memory. The HEIC converter stops at 16,384 pixels on a side.
Questions people ask
Are the image tools free?
Yes, with no account and no watermark.
Are my images uploaded?
No. They are processed in your browser.
How do I reduce an image to 100 KB?
Use the target size tool or the 100 KB page. It searches the quality and shrinks the picture only if quality alone cannot reach the limit.
Why does the picture get smaller when I set a small size?
Below a certain quality the picture looks worse than a smaller, sharper picture, so the tool shrinks the dimensions first.
Can I convert HEIC without installing anything?
Yes. The HEIC converter decodes the file in your browser.
Does PNG to JPG always make a smaller file?
No. Photographs shrink a lot, but text screenshots and flat graphics can grow.
