Quality problems
Why is my Instagram Story blurry? Find the cause in 30 seconds
Short answer
A Story looks blurry for one of five reasons: the upload went out at reduced quality (turn on Profile → Menu → Media quality → Upload at highest quality), the photo or clip is not 1080×1920, an iPhone HDR clip lost detail when converted, the Story is a re-shared post shown as a small sticker, or your own phone is set to load low-resolution media. Check which one applies with the table below before re-posting.
Key takeaways
- Turn on Profile → Menu → Media quality → Upload at highest quality; it is the only upload-quality control in the app (Instagram Help).
- Stories are 9:16. Post photos and videos at 1080 × 1920 so Instagram never has to enlarge them.
- A feed post or Reel shared to your Story appears as a smaller sticker on a background, so it looks softer than the original.
- On Android, Data Saver decides when you see high-resolution media; it changes what you see, not what you upload.
- Instagram's API caps Story videos at 1920 px wide, 25 Mbps and 60 seconds; files inside those limits convert most predictably.
Why Instagram Stories look blurry
Every Story is re-encoded by Instagram and shown full screen, so two things decide how sharp it looks: how much detail the file has before upload, and whether it has to be enlarged to fill a 9:16 phone screen. A 1080 × 1920 photo is shown almost pixel for pixel; a 1080 × 1080 square or a 1920 × 1080 landscape clip is enlarged or boxed, and enlarged pixels look soft.
The other common causes sit outside the file: the app sent a lighter copy (Upload at highest quality off or a weak connection), the Story is a re-share of a post, or your own phone is set to load low-resolution media.
Find your case
| What you see | What it usually means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Every Story you post looks soft, photos and videos alike | Uploads are not sent at the highest quality | Turn on Upload at highest quality, re-post over Wi-Fi (steps 1-2) |
| Sharp to your friends, blurry only on your phone | Your app loads low-resolution media (Android Data Saver / High Resolution Media) | Change your own playback setting (step 3) |
| Photo has bars or looks enlarged and soft | It was not 9:16, so Instagram scaled it to fill the frame | Export 1080×1920 before posting (step 4) |
| iPhone video looks washed out and soft | HDR clip converted for standard screens | Post an SDR copy (step 5) |
| A feed post or Reel you shared to your Story is blurry | It is shown as a scaled-down sticker of the original | Post the original file to the Story instead (step 6) |
| Dark, grainy and blurry | Low light; noise is hard to compress | More light or Night mode on iPhone (step 7) |
| you add music | The Story is re-rendered with the sticker and track | Add music to a 1080 × 1920 original, post on Wi-Fi |
| after posting, but fine in preview | Upload sent a lighter copy | Upload at highest quality on, Wi-Fi |
Fix it step by step
Turn on Upload at highest quality
Instagram documents this toggle for Reels; it is the only upload-quality control in the app, so turn it on before posting Stories too. Uploads may take longer with it on.

Post over a stable connection, then check on Wi-Fi
Instagram's own troubleshooting asks you to compare Wi-Fi and mobile data when something does not work. Post once on Wi-Fi; if that Story is sharp, the connection was the cause.
Check your own playback setting (Android)
On Android, with Data Saver on, Instagram lets you choose when you see high-resolution media: Never, Wi-Fi only, or Cellular + Wi-Fi. Set it to Cellular + Wi-Fi, or switch Data Saver off. On iPhone, Use less cellular data only stops videos preloading on mobile data; it does not change what you upload.

Size photos and clips to 1080×1920
Stories fill a 9:16 screen. A square or landscape photo is either padded or scaled up, and scaling up a small image is what looks soft. Export at 1080×1920 so nothing is enlarged.
Post SDR, not HDR, from an iPhone
iPhones record HDR video by default. Converted for standard screens, HDR clips often look flatter and softer. Export an SDR copy, or turn off Settings → Camera → Record Video → HDR Video (iPhone 12 and later) for clips you plan to post.
Post the original instead of re-sharing
Sharing a feed post or Reel to your Story places a smaller copy of it on a background. To fill the Story at full size, add the original file from your camera roll as a new Story.
Give the camera more light
Noise changes every frame, so compression spends its data on grain and smears detail. Add light, or on iPhone keep tapping Flash in the Story camera until Night mode appears.
What to post for a sharp Story
| Size | 1080 × 1920 px (9:16) · nothing is scaled up |
|---|---|
| Video | H.264 in MP4, 30 fps, AAC audio · the combination Instagram's API spec lists for Stories |
| Color | SDR · HDR is converted for most screens |
| App setting | Upload at highest quality: on · Profile → Menu → Media quality |
| Connection | Wi-Fi for the upload |
Blurry Stories with music
Adding a music sticker means Instagram re-renders the whole Story with the sticker and the track, so any weakness in the original (a small photo, a re-shared post, a weak connection) shows more. Start from a 1080 × 1920 original, add the music in Instagram, and post on Wi-Fi with Upload at highest quality on. If the music sticker is missing altogether, Instagram's help notes that it is not available to everyone; updating the app is the first fix.
Clear the cache, update, reinstall: what each one does
Instagram's own troubleshooting order is: update the app and your phone's system, restart the phone, compare Wi-Fi with mobile data, and then delete and reinstall Instagram. None of these change how a file is encoded; they fix an app that is uploading badly or stuck.
- Android: Settings → Apps → Instagram → Storage → Clear cache removes temporary files without signing you out.
- iPhone has no cache button: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Instagram → Offload App removes the app but keeps its data, then Reinstall App.
- Before reinstalling, post or save any Story drafts you want to keep.
Instagram's video limits, Reel vs Story
Instagram does not publish limits for the app itself, but its publishing API does, and files inside these limits are the ones that post most reliably from any route.

Instagram's quality and data settings, exact paths
| Setting | Where (Instagram Help) | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Upload at highest quality | Profile → Menu → Media quality | What you upload; uploads may take longer |
| Use less cellular data (iPhone) | Profile → Menu → Media quality | Stops videos preloading on mobile data |
| Data Saver (Android) | Profile → Menu → Data usage and media quality | Uses less data while you watch |
| High resolution media (Android) | Same screen, with Data Saver on | When you see high-resolution media: Never, Wi-Fi only, or Cellular + Wi-Fi |
Only the first row affects what other people see. The others change what your own phone downloads, which is why a post can look soft to you and sharp to everyone else.
Check your file
Extension and MIME type are labels, not proof of the container. Dimensions and duration come from this browser's media reader. This does not detect codecs, bitrate, corruption or platform upload compatibility. Files and measurements are not sent anywhere.
Common mix-ups
- “Data Saver lowers the quality of what you upload”
Instagram's help describes Data Saver and Use less cellular data as playback settings: they stop videos preloading on mobile data and, on Android, decide when you see high-resolution media. Upload quality is a separate toggle, Upload at highest quality.
- “Uploading 4K makes Stories sharper”
Stories are shown at phone resolution. A 4K file is converted anyway and takes longer to upload; a clean 1080×1920 export gives Instagram less to change.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my Instagram Stories blurry but my posts are fine?
Stories fill a 9:16 screen, so photos that are not 1080×1920 are scaled, and re-shared posts appear as small stickers. Export the Story at 1080×1920 and post the original file.
How do I upload high-quality Stories on Instagram?
Turn on Upload at highest quality (Profile → Menu → Media quality), post a 1080×1920 SDR file over Wi-Fi, and avoid posting copies saved from other apps.
Why does my Story look blurry only on my phone?
Your app may be loading low-resolution media. On Android, check Data usage and media quality → High Resolution Media; then compare on another phone.
Does the Instagram camera make Stories blurry?
Many Android users report sharper results when they record with the phone's own camera and upload the clip. Instagram does not document a difference, so test both on your phone.
Why is my Instagram Story blurry when I post it but not in the preview?
The preview shows your original file; the posted Story is Instagram's re-encoded copy. If the copy is much softer, the app likely sent a lighter version: turn on Upload at highest quality and post on Wi-Fi.
Why is my Instagram Story blurry when I repost?
A reposted feed post or Reel is placed on your Story as a smaller sticker of the original. Post the original file from your gallery as a new Story to fill the screen.
Why is my Instagram Story blurry with music?
The Story is re-rendered with the music sticker, which makes a small or compressed original look worse. Use a 1080 × 1920 original and post on Wi-Fi with Upload at highest quality on.
Why are my Instagram Story highlights blurry?
Highlights replay the original Story, so a blurry Story stays blurry there. The highlight cover is a small circle cropped from an image; use a sharp square image for it.
