Quality problems
Why are my YouTube Shorts blurry? Processing, settings and fixes
Short answer
Right after upload, YouTube streams a low-quality version so the upload finishes faster; 1080p and 4K appear only when high-resolution processing completes, which can take hours for long, 4K or 60 fps files. If the Short is still soft after that, check the quality setting in the YouTube app and the source itself: a low-resolution, landscape or re-compressed clip cannot gain detail.
Key takeaways
- YouTube makes a new upload available in low quality first; 1080p and 4K appear only after high-resolution processing, which can take hours (YouTube Help).
- If 1080p is missing from the Quality menu, the Short is still processing. If 720p is the highest option, the upload itself was 720p.
- Playback quality also depends on your connection, screen size and browser; some devices cannot play 1080p or 4K because they lack the VP9 codec.
- Export 1080 × 1920 or 2160 × 3840 at the frame rate you recorded, at YouTube's recommended bitrate: 8 Mbps for 1080p at 24 to 30 fps, 12 Mbps at 48 to 60 fps.
- Shorts can be up to 3 minutes long, in a square or vertical aspect ratio.
What happens to a Short after you upload it
YouTube's help explains that every upload is first processed in low quality so the upload finishes faster, then streamed in low quality on a wide range of devices. Higher qualities such as 1080p and 4K take longer, and while they are processed the video may seem to be missing them for several hours. 4K files are four times larger than 1080p, so 4K can take four times longer; higher frame rates such as 60 fps also take longer.
A Short is usually much shorter than YouTube's own example (a 60-minute 4K video at 30 fps can take up to 4 hours), but the order is the same: judge sharpness only after the higher qualities appear.
- On a computer, open the Short, then replace /shorts/ in the address with /watch?v= to open it in the regular player.
- Select Settings (the gear) → Quality.
- If 1080p or higher is missing, the Short is still processing. Wait and check again.
Blurry when you watch, or blurry for everyone?
YouTube changes the quality of a stream based on viewing conditions: the speed of your connection, the size of the player and screen, the quality of the original upload and your browser. A Short that looks soft only on your phone is usually a playback setting or a slow network, not your file.
Blurry on your phone
In the YouTube app go to your profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences and choose Higher picture quality for mobile networks and Wi-Fi. Data saver keeps quality low on purpose.
Blurry on a computer
Vertical Shorts play in a narrow player on desktop, with padding at the sides. Open the Short in the regular player (/watch?v=) and pick the quality yourself. Some browsers do not support newer formats, so try another one.
Some Shorts sharp, others blurry
Each Short is processed from its own upload. One recorded at 720p, downloaded from another app, or uploaded minutes ago will look softer than a fresh 1080p export that has finished processing.
Find your case
| What you see | What it usually means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Blurry right after upload, fine a few hours later | High-resolution processing had not finished | Wait, then check the Quality menu (step 1) |
| Blurry only in your YouTube app | Video quality preferences set to Data saver or Auto on a slow network | Set Higher picture quality (step 2) |
| Never better than 720p in the Quality menu | The upload itself was 720p or lower | Re-export at 1080×1920 or higher (step 3) |
| Landscape clip looks small and soft | 16:9 in a vertical frame leaves a 1080×608 picture | Reframe to 9:16 (step 4) |
| Downloaded from TikTok or Reels and re-posted | Second round of compression | Upload the original export (step 5) |
Fix it step by step
Let high-resolution processing finish
YouTube first makes a low-quality version available, then adds higher qualities. 4K files are about four times larger than 1080p and can take about four times longer; 60 fps files also take longer. Open the Short on a computer, choose Settings → Quality: if 1080p is missing, it is still processing.
Check your own playback setting
The app can deliberately play a lower quality. Set Higher picture quality for mobile networks and Wi-Fi.

Upload at least 1080×1920
YouTube can only offer qualities up to your upload's resolution. Export 1080×1920 (or 2160×3840) at the frame rate you recorded.
Reframe landscape clips
A 1920×1080 clip in the vertical Shorts player is scaled to 1080 px wide and only 608 px tall. Crop or reframe to 9:16 before upload.
Upload the original, not a download
A Short saved from another platform has already been compressed; uploading it compresses it again. Use the export from your editor or camera roll.
Export settings for a sharp Short
| Resolution | 1080 × 1920 or 2160 × 3840 (9:16) |
|---|---|
| Frame rate | Same as recorded (24, 30 or 60 fps) · 60 fps takes longer to process |
| Codec / container | H.264 in MP4, AAC audio · Recommended in our YouTube Shorts codec table |
| After upload | Wait for 1080p in Settings → Quality before judging sharpness |
YouTube's recommended bitrates for a sharp Short
YouTube publishes target bitrates for SDR uploads. Exporting below them gives YouTube's encoder less detail to work with; exporting far above them only makes the upload slower.
| Upload resolution (vertical) | 24 to 30 fps | 48 to 60 fps |
|---|---|---|
| 720 × 1280 (720p) | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080 × 1920 (1080p) | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440 × 2560 (1440p) | 16 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160 × 3840 (4K) | 35 to 45 Mbps | 53 to 68 Mbps |
YouTube's recommended audio is AAC-LC (or Opus) and the container MP4. If your editor offers a bitrate setting, use these figures; if it offers only a quality slider, choose the highest preset at 1080 × 1920.
Should you upload Shorts in 4K?
A 2160 × 3840 upload gives YouTube more detail to start from, and creators widely report that 1080p playback of a 4K upload looks cleaner than playback of a 1080p upload. The costs: the file is about four times larger, and YouTube says 4K quality can take four times longer to appear. If your camera records 4K and your connection can take it, upload the 4K export; never upscale a 1080p clip to 4K, which adds no detail.
Old or repurposed footage
Clips cut from an old landscape video, screen recordings and Shorts downloaded from other apps start soft. A 1920 × 1080 clip cropped to 9:16 keeps only 608 × 1080 pixels of real picture, which YouTube then scales to the Shorts frame. Where possible, go back to the original recording, or reframe so the subject fills more of the frame. AI upscalers can reduce blocky artifacts, but they guess detail rather than recover it, so check faces and text closely before posting.

Light matters more than resolution
A dark scene forces the camera to raise its sensitivity, which adds noise that changes every frame. YouTube's encoder then spends its data on that noise and smears the detail you care about. Filming near a window, adding a cheap LED light or lowering the camera's ISO often does more for a Short than switching from 1080p to 4K.
Shorts made from landscape videos
YouTube's Create a Short from a video and editors that crop 16:9 to 9:16 keep only the middle of the frame: from a 1920 × 1080 source, that is about 608 × 1080 pixels, enlarged to fill a 1080 × 1920 player. Start from 4K landscape footage when you plan to crop vertical Shorts from it, so the crop still has about 1215 × 2160 real pixels.
Give HD processing time before judging
YouTube says higher qualities can be missing for several hours while high-resolution processing finishes, and that a 60 minute 4K video at 30 fps can take up to 4 hours. A Short that looks soft right after upload may sharpen on its own, so check the watch page again later before re-uploading.

Frequently asked questions
How long does YouTube take to process HD for a Short?
It depends on length, resolution, frame rate and traffic. YouTube's own example: a 60-minute 4K 30 fps video can take up to 4 hours; a Short usually takes much less, but higher qualities can still lag behind the upload.
How do I turn up the quality on YouTube Shorts?
In the app: profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences → Higher picture quality. On a computer, use Settings → Quality on the video.
Why are my Shorts sharp on a computer but blurry on my phone?
Your phone may be set to Data saver or Auto on a slow network. Change Video quality preferences, then compare on Wi-Fi.
What resolution are YouTube Shorts?
Shorts are square or vertical videos. Upload 1080 × 1920 (9:16) for a full-screen Short, or 2160 × 3840 if you recorded in 4K.
Why do YouTube Shorts look blurry on PC?
Shorts play in a narrow vertical player on desktop and the quality is picked automatically. Open the Short as /watch?v= and choose a higher quality under Settings → Quality.
Why are some YouTube Shorts blurry and others sharp?
Each Short is processed from its own upload. Low-resolution sources, re-downloaded clips and Shorts still processing look softer than finished 1080p uploads.
How long are YouTube Shorts allowed to be?
Up to three minutes. Square or vertical videos up to three minutes uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 are categorized as Shorts.
Why are all my YouTube Shorts blurry?
If every Short is soft, check your export (resolution and bitrate), your camera's light and the app's playback setting. Compare a Short after HD processing on another device.
Why are my YouTube Shorts blurry on my phone only?
Your app may be on Data saver or Auto on a slow network. Set Video quality preferences to Higher picture quality and test on Wi-Fi.
How do I fix blurry YouTube Shorts?
Upload 1080 × 1920 or higher at YouTube's recommended bitrate, wait for HD processing, film in good light and post the original export, not a downloaded copy.
Why does YouTube keep going blurry while I watch?
YouTube changes the stream quality as your connection changes. Pick a quality yourself in Settings → Quality, or use Wi-Fi.
Why are YouTube Shorts blurry on PC?
Shorts play in a narrow vertical player on desktop and the quality is chosen automatically. Open the Short with /watch?v= in the address and pick a higher quality.
Why is YouTube making my Shorts blurry?
YouTube shows a low-quality version first and adds HD after processing, and it picks a quality for each viewer's connection. If the Short is still soft after processing, the upload was low resolution or low bitrate.
