Quality problems
Why is my YouTube video blurry? Processing and fixes
Short answer
A freshly uploaded YouTube video is first available only in low quality so the upload finishes faster. 1080p and 4K appear when high-resolution processing completes, which YouTube says can take hours: a 60-minute 4K 30 fps video can take up to 4 hours, and 60 fps takes longer. If it is still soft afterwards, check the quality being played and the resolution you uploaded.
Key takeaways
- New uploads are first available in low quality; 1080p and 4K appear after high-resolution processing, and a 60-minute 4K 30 fps video can take up to 4 hours (YouTube Help).
- YouTube picks the stream from your connection, player size, the original upload and your browser; a video recorded in SD will never be offered in HD.
- Some devices cannot play 1080p or 4K because they do not support the VP9 codec, so the same video looks sharper elsewhere.
- Right-click the player and open Stats for nerds to see the resolution and codec actually playing.
- Upload at YouTube's recommended bitrate: 8 Mbps for 1080p at 24 to 30 fps, 35 to 45 Mbps for 4K.
Blurry after upload, or blurry for you?
To see exactly what is playing, right-click the player on a computer and choose Stats for nerds: the current and optimal resolution and the codec are listed there.
Find your case
| What you see | What it usually means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Blurry right after publishing, no 1080p in the menu | High-resolution processing hasn't finished | Wait; check Settings → Quality (step 1) |
| 1080p available but the player picks 360p/480p | Auto quality chose a lower stream for the connection or player size | Set quality manually (step 2) |
| Highest option is 720p or lower | The upload itself was that resolution | Re-export at 1080p or higher (step 3) |
| Sharp on computer, soft on one device or browser | That device can't play the newer formats used for 1080p/4K | Try another device (step 4) |
| Dark or fast scenes blocky | Bitrate spread over noise and motion | Upload a higher-bitrate master (step 5) |
| Blurry before uploading | The export or the source | Check the file in a player at 100% |
Fix it step by step
Let processing finish, then check the Quality menu
YouTube first makes a low-quality version available. Open the watch page, click Settings → Quality: if 1080p or 4K is missing, it is still processing in the background. 4K files are about 4 times larger than 1080p and can take about 4 times longer.
Set the playback quality yourself
YouTube changes stream quality with player size, connection and browser. Choose the quality manually on the watch page; in the app, set Video quality preferences to Higher picture quality.
Upload at least 1080p
YouTube can only offer qualities up to your upload: a video recorded in standard definition won't be available in HD. For 16:9 use 1920×1080, 2560×1440 or 3840×2160.
Check the device
YouTube notes that some high-quality formats such as 1080p and 4K may not be available on devices that don't support VP9 compression. Compare on a current browser before re-uploading.
Export a clean master
YouTube recommends H.264 in MP4 with AAC-LC or Opus audio. Export at your recording frame rate with a generous bitrate. Some creators upscale 1080p footage to 1440p to get a higher-bitrate stream; YouTube does not document this, so treat it as an option to test, not a rule.
YouTube's recommended upload settings
| Container | MP4 |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 |
| Audio codec | AAC-LC or Opus |
| Resolution | 1920×1080, 2560×1440 or 3840×2160 for 16:9 |
| Frame rate | same as recorded · 60 fps takes longer to process |
YouTube's recommended upload bitrates
YouTube publishes target bitrates for SDR uploads. Below these, the encoder starts with too little detail; far above them, uploads are only slower.
| Upload resolution | 24 to 30 fps | 48 to 60 fps |
|---|---|---|
| 720p | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080p | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p | 16 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 35 to 45 Mbps | 53 to 68 Mbps |
Use H.264 in MP4 with AAC-LC audio at the frame rate you recorded. A 4K upload gives YouTube more detail to start from even for viewers who watch at 1080p, at the cost of about four times the processing time.
Blurry on TV, iPad or in a browser
TV
In the video player on your TV select Settings and choose a quality. YouTube notes some high-quality formats such as 1080p and 4K are not available on every device because they need VP9 support.
iPhone and iPad
YouTube app: profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences → Higher picture quality. With YouTube Premium, 1080p Premium is available on Apple phones and tablets.
Browser
Choose the quality in Settings → Quality, and update the browser: YouTube says some browsers don't support newer formats or quality options.
Fix YouTube playback on your phone or browser
YouTube app
- Update the app, then restart the phone.
- Android: Settings → Apps → YouTube → Storage → Clear cache.
- iPhone: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → YouTube → Offload App, then reinstall.
- Profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences: Data saver lowers quality on purpose.
Browser
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Delete browsing data → Cached images and files.
- Edge: Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Clear browsing data.
- Safari: Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data → remove youtube.com.
- Toggle hardware acceleration (Chrome: Settings → System → Use graphics acceleration when available) and restart the browser.
- Turn off extensions, then reload.
A sharp upload, step by step
- Record at the resolution you will upload, in good light.
- Edit on a timeline at that resolution and frame rate.
- Export H.264 MP4 at YouTube's recommended bitrate (8 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 35 to 45 Mbps for 4K).
- Upload the export, not a compressed copy.
- Wait for HD processing before judging sharpness.
Check your file
Extension and MIME type are labels, not proof of the container. Dimensions and duration come from this browser's media reader. This does not detect codecs, bitrate, corruption or platform upload compatibility. Files and measurements are not sent anywhere.
Common mix-ups
- “YouTube permanently lowers the quality of new videos”
Only temporarily: YouTube streams a low-quality version first and adds higher qualities when processing finishes.
Frequently asked questions
How long does YouTube take to process HD?
It depends on length, resolution, frame rate and traffic. YouTube's example: a 60-minute 4K 30 fps video can take up to 4 hours; 60 fps takes longer.
Why is my YouTube video only 360p?
Either HD processing hasn't finished, the player chose 360p for your connection, or the upload was low resolution. Check Settings → Quality on the watch page.
Does verifying my account speed up HD processing?
YouTube's help says to verify your account for optimal processing time.
Why is my YouTube video blurry on TV?
The TV app chose a lower stream or the TV does not support VP9 for 1080p and 4K. Select Settings in the TV player and pick the quality; if it is missing, the device cannot play it.
Why is my YouTube video blurry before uploading?
Then the export is the cause: a low resolution, a low bitrate or an upscaled source. Check the file at 100% in a player and re-export at 1080p or higher at YouTube's recommended bitrate.
How do I see what resolution YouTube is playing?
Right-click the player and choose Stats for nerds; it shows the current resolution, the optimal one and the codec.
Why are YouTube videos blurry at the beginning?
YouTube starts streams at a lower quality and raises it as it measures your connection. If it stays blurry, pick the quality in Settings → Quality.
Why is my YouTube thumbnail blurry?
The image is small or compressed. Upload a large, sharp image as a custom thumbnail in YouTube Studio; custom thumbnails need a verified account.
How do I fix blurry YouTube videos on iPhone or iPad?
Profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences → Higher picture quality, and check on Wi-Fi. With Premium, 1080p Premium is available on Apple devices.
How do I fix blurry YouTube videos on Android?
Set Video quality preferences to Higher picture quality, clear the YouTube app's cache and update the app.
Why is YouTube blurring my video on purpose?
YouTube doesn't blur uploads on purpose; it streams a lower quality while HD processes and when your connection is slow. YouTube Studio does have a Blur tool for faces and objects, which only applies if you use it.
Why is my YouTube video fuzzy?
Fuzzy usually means a low stream quality or an upload with too little detail. Check Settings → Quality; if 1080p is missing, it is still processing or the upload was lower.
Why is my YouTube video blurry on iPhone?
Check Video quality preferences in the app and test on Wi-Fi. With Premium, 1080p Premium is available on Apple phones and tablets.
