YouTube Shorts not getting views? What YouTube ranks

Updated 5 fixes6 sources

Short answer

Since 31 March 2025 a Shorts view counts every time the Short starts or replays, with no minimum watch time, so 0 views means it is barely being shown. Check three things first: the video really is a Short (square or vertical, 3 minutes or less), it isn't blocked by a copyright claim (any active claim blocks Shorts over one minute), and YouTube isn't still verifying the count, which it can freeze or slow down.

Key takeaways

  • YouTube says its system has no opinion about the type of Shorts you make; Shorts are ranked on performance and on each viewer's personalization.
  • The performance signals YouTube names: the share of viewers who chose to view, average view duration and average percentage viewed.
  • Topic interest, competition from other channels' Shorts and seasonal traffic change impressions even when your metrics are good.
  • Since March 31, 2025, Shorts views count every start or replay; Engaged views in Analytics show who kept watching. From August 24, 2026 views count at the start of play in every format.
  • Shorts performance does not hurt your long-form recommendations, and there is no minimum posting cadence (YouTube Help).

How YouTube decides who sees your Shorts

YouTube's help on Shorts discovery describes the system plainly. Viewers are matched to the Shorts they are most likely to watch and enjoy, using the Shorts and channels they enjoyed before, the topics they watch, and trending songs or sampled audio they engaged with. The system does not favor any particular format.

When a Short is shown, YouTube looks at what happens next: whether viewers choose to watch it, ignore it or tap Not interested, and whether they stick around. It uses the share of viewers who chose to view, average view duration and average percentage viewed to inform ranking.

Fix it step by step

  1. Confirm it is a Short

YouTube treats uploads as Shorts when they are up to 3 minutes and square or vertical. A 16:9 or longer video goes to the regular feed instead.

  2. Check for a copyright block

Shorts longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim are blocked on YouTube regardless of the claim policy. Look in YouTube Studio → Content → Shorts → Claims.

  3. Understand how views are counted

Shorts views count each start or replay with no minimum watch time; from 24 August 2026 all formats count a view when the video starts to play. YouTube may temporarily slow down, freeze or adjust counts to verify that views are legitimate, so the public count can lag Analytics.

  4. Watch Engaged views, not just views

YouTube keeps Engaged views in Analytics to show how many people chose to keep watching. It, not total views, drives Shorts revenue sharing and YPP eligibility. Low engaged views mean the opening isn't holding people.

  5. Check visibility and audience settings

Make sure the Short is Public, not Private, Unlisted or still Scheduled, and that the audience setting is correct for the content.

0 views: check these before the content

  • It is a Short: square or vertical and three minutes or less. A landscape upload is a regular video.
  • No active copyright claim: any claim blocks a Short over one minute.
  • Visibility is Public and the audience setting is right; made-for-kids content has limited features.
  • Metrics can be slow at first: YouTube says counts may take time to appear in the first hours and may be temporarily slowed or frozen while they are verified.

Read the right numbers in Analytics

Since March 31, 2025, a Shorts view counts every time the Short starts or replays, with no minimum watch time; the older metric is kept as Engaged views. YouTube's help adds that beginning August 24, 2026 views count the moment a video starts to play across all formats, while YouTube Partner Program earnings stay based on engaged views and engaged watch hours. Compare Shorts on Engaged views and average percentage viewed rather than on the public view count.

Search, sounds and posting at the same time

Shorts also reach people through search, where YouTube ranks on how well the metadata matches the search and whether viewers click and watch, and through sounds pages, where creators using popular sounds from the Audio Library can appear. A clear title and description help search; posting time matters less than whether the first seconds hold viewers.

Shorts re-uploaded from other apps with their watermarks look recycled to viewers; export the original without another app's watermark.

Where to read why a Short stalled

  • YouTube Studio → Analytics → Content → Shorts: compare views, average view duration and average percentage viewed across your Shorts.
  • Open one Short's analytics and look at how many viewers chose to view it rather than swiping away; YouTube names this share as a ranking signal.
  • Traffic sources show whether viewers came from the Shorts feed, search, channel pages or external links. A Short with views only from your channel page was not picked up by the feed.
  • Compare Engaged views with views: since March 31, 2025 views count every start or replay, Engaged views count viewers who chose to keep watching.

A checklist for the next Short

  1. The first frame shows the subject, not a logo or a blank screen.
  2. The point arrives in the first seconds; cut the setup.
  3. The length fits the idea: every second has to earn the next one, since average percentage viewed is a ranking signal.
  4. Vertical 1080 × 1920, sharp, with clear audio and no other app's watermark.
  5. On-screen text inside the safe area and readable at phone size.
  6. A title and description that say what the Short is about, for search.
  7. A trending sound from the Audio Library when it fits, to appear on sound pages.
  8. Published as Public, with the right audience setting, and no copyright claim.

Subscribers, the Subscriptions feed and older Shorts

YouTube's discovery help describes separate surfaces: the Shorts feed shows Shorts each viewer is most likely to enjoy, while the Subscriptions feed shows the most recently uploaded Shorts from channels a viewer subscribes to. A channel with many subscribers who rarely watch Shorts will not get Shorts views from that base automatically.

Older Shorts can keep getting views from search and sound pages long after the first days in the feed. A Short that stalled early is not penalized; it simply was not matched to viewers, and a new Short on the same idea with a stronger opening is a fresh test.

How long should a Short be?

Shorts can be up to three minutes. Length is not a ranking factor by itself, but average percentage viewed is: a 20-second Short that most people finish usually does better than a 90-second Short most people leave. Use the length the idea needs. Note the copyright rule as well: any active Content ID claim blocks a Short over one minute.

Common mistakes that hold Shorts back

  • A slow opening: an intro, a logo or silence before the point.
  • Landscape video in the Shorts player, small and boxed.
  • Another app's watermark, or a re-upload of a clip already on YouTube.
  • Text covered by the title, channel name or buttons.
  • Claimed music on a Short over one minute, which blocks it.
  • A topic too broad to match to any audience, or too narrow for anyone to watch.
  • Judging a Short on its first hour: metrics can be delayed or frozen while verified.

Does posting time matter for Shorts?

YouTube's help says there is no minimum posting cadence and that traffic varies across the year, with fluctuations around major holidays. Posting when your audience is awake helps the first viewers find the Short, but the Shorts feed keeps testing a Short with new viewers well after the first hours, so the opening and the retention matter far more than the minute you publish.

Common mix-ups

  • “A Short needs to be watched for a few seconds to count”

Not since 31 March 2025: a Shorts view counts when it starts to play or replays. Engaged views keep the old, stricter measure.

  • “0 views means the channel is shadowbanned”

Check the measurable causes first: not a Short, blocked by a claim, not public, or a count YouTube is still verifying.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my YouTube Shorts have 0 views?

Most often it isn't classified as a Short, it's blocked by a claim, or it isn't public. Otherwise the count may still be verifying.

How are YouTube Shorts views counted?

Each start or replay counts, with no minimum watch time (since 31 March 2025). Engaged views show people who chose to keep watching.

Why is my Shorts view count frozen?

YouTube may slow down or freeze counts while it confirms views are from real people. Check Analytics for activity.

Why are my YouTube Shorts not getting views anymore?

Topic interest, competition and seasonality change impressions even when your metrics are steady. Compare average percentage viewed and the share who chose to view across recent Shorts to see whether viewers' response dropped.

Do Shorts hurt my long-form videos?

No. YouTube says Shorts performance doesn't negatively impact long-form recommendations; Shorts can help discovery.

How often should I post Shorts?

YouTube says there is no minimum posting cadence for videos to perform well; post at a pace you can keep with the quality your audience watches.

Why are my YouTube Shorts getting views but not my long videos?

Shorts and long videos are recommended separately to different viewing habits. YouTube says Shorts don't hurt long-form recommendations; long videos need their own title, thumbnail and watch time.

Why are some of my YouTube Shorts not getting views?

Each Short is ranked on how viewers respond to it. Compare the share who chose to view and the average percentage viewed between your Shorts.

Why are my YouTube Shorts not getting any views at all?

Check that it really is a Short (square or vertical, 3 minutes or less), that it is Public and not blocked by a copyright claim, and give metrics a few hours to appear.

How long should I wait before deciding a Short failed?

Give it at least a day. YouTube says metrics may take time to appear in the first hours and can be slowed or frozen while they are verified.

Do hashtags help YouTube Shorts get views?

A relevant hashtag can help with search and topic matching, but YouTube ranks Shorts mainly on how viewers respond. A clear title and description matter more than many hashtags.

Should I delete Shorts that got no views?

There is no need. YouTube says the system has no opinion about the type of Shorts you make, and a low-performing Short does not hurt your other videos.

What is a good length for YouTube Shorts?

As long as the idea needs and no longer: average percentage viewed is a ranking signal. Shorts can be up to three minutes, but claimed music blocks Shorts over one minute.

Why do my Shorts get views from subscribers only?

The Short is not being matched to new viewers in the Shorts feed. Work on the first seconds, the topic and retention; subscribers also see your recent Shorts in their Subscriptions feed.

Do trending sounds help YouTube Shorts?

YouTube says creators using popular sounds from the Audio Library can appear on sounds pages, and trending audio is one of the cues used to recommend Shorts. Use them when they fit the Short.
