How to add transitions in Premiere Pro (and why they won't fit)

Updated 4 steps2 min read

Short answer

Trim your clips first, then drag a transition from Effects > Video Transitions onto the cut between two clips, or select the cut and press Ctrl-D (Windows) / Cmd-D (Mac) for the default Cross Dissolve. Adobe's tip: trim at least 15 frames off each clip so a centred one-second transition has frames to use.

Step by step: Add a transition

  1. Trim first

Before applying a transition, trim the clips. The more you trim, the more frames the transition can use. Trim at least 15 frames off each clip for a centred one-second transition.

  2. Drag it onto the cut

Open Effects > Video Transitions, choose one (Dissolve > Cross Dissolve is the most common), and drop it on the cut line between the clips.

  4. Adjust it

Click the transition in the timeline and set Duration and Alignment (centre, start or end of cut) in Effect Controls.
