Premiere Pro how-to
How to motion track in Premiere Pro (masks, text and limits)
Short answer
Premiere's built-in tracker follows masks, not layers. Draw a mask on an effect (for example Gaussian Blur or Lumetri), then click Track selected mask forward and Premiere moves the mask with the subject. To make text or a graphic follow something, either keyframe its Position by hand or send the clip to After Effects, whose point tracker can drive the text's position.

Method 1: Track a mask (blur, color, highlight)
Apply an effect and draw a mask
Apply the effect you want to follow the subject, then in Effect Controls use the ellipse, rectangle or pen under that effect to draw a mask around it.
Track the mask
Select the mask and click Track selected mask forward and backward (or forward only). Premiere analyzes the clip and moves the mask frame by frame.
Fix drift
Scrub through. Where the mask slips, move the playhead to that frame, adjust the mask and track again from there; the 1-frame buttons help on hard sections.
Method 2: Make text follow a subject
There is no attach-to-tracker option for text in Premiere.
Keyframe Position by hand
Select the text layer, turn on Toggle Animation for Motion > Position, and move the text every few frames to stay on the subject. Keyframes every 5 to 10 frames are often enough for slow movement.
Or use After Effects
For accurate tracking, send the clip to After Effects with Dynamic Link (right-click > Replace With After Effects Composition), track the point there and parent the text to the track. The comp updates in Premiere.
If it doesn't work
| What you see | Fix |
|---|---|
| Mask jumps off the subject | Low-contrast or blurry footage tracks poorly. Track in short sections, or use a smaller mask on a high-contrast detail. |
| No track buttons | The buttons appear only when a mask is selected inside an effect in Effect Controls. |
| Tracking is very slow | Track a lower-resolution proxy or turn the Program Monitor resolution down during tracking. |
| Text lags behind the subject | Add more Position keyframes where the motion changes direction, or move the job to After Effects. |
Questions people ask
Does Premiere Pro have motion tracking?
Yes, for masks. Adobe's tracker moves a mask with the subject so an effect follows it. It can't attach text or graphics directly.
How do I blur a moving face in Premiere Pro?
Apply Gaussian Blur or Mosaic, draw an ellipse mask on the face and track it forward.
Is After Effects needed for tracking text?
For reliable tracking, yes; Adobe points to After Effects via Dynamic Link for advanced tracking. Manual keyframes work for short, slow shots.
