CapCut how-to
How to overlay a video or picture in CapCut (picture-in-picture)
Short answer
On mobile, tap Overlay in the bottom toolbar, then Add overlay, choose a video or photo and tap Add: it appears over your main clip, where you can pinch to resize and drag to place it. On CapCut desktop, drag the second clip onto a track above the main track. Use Opacity and Blend (Screen, Multiply and others) to mix it in, and Remove background to cut out a person.

Method 1: CapCut mobile
Open Overlay
With your main video in the timeline, tap Overlay in the bottom toolbar, then Add overlay.
OverlayAdd overlay
Pick the media
Choose the video or image to place on top and tap Add. It lands on a new track above the main clip at the playhead.
Size and position it
Pinch on the preview to resize and drag to move it, for example to a corner for a picture-in-picture reaction.
Blend it in
With the overlay selected, use Opacity to fade it or Blend to choose a mode such as Screen (removes black) or Multiply (removes white).
Method 2: CapCut desktop
Put the main video on the main track
Import your media and drag the background video onto the timeline.
Drag the overlay above it
Drag the second clip or image onto the empty area above the main track. It plays on top for as long as it overlaps.
Adjust in the panel
Select the overlay and use the Video panel on the right for Scale, Position, Opacity and Blend; Remove BG cuts out a person without a green screen.

Blend modes that solve common overlays
| Overlay | Blend mode | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Light leaks, fire, sparks on black | Screen | Black becomes transparent |
| Paper texture, ink on white | Multiply | White becomes transparent |
| Green screen clip | Chroma key (Cutout) instead | Removes the green |
| Logo or watermark | Normal, opacity 60 to 80% | Visible but not distracting |
If it doesn't work
| What you see | Fix |
|---|---|
| Overlay button is missing | Scroll the bottom toolbar; it sits after Text and Effects. Tap the empty timeline first so the main toolbar shows. |
| Overlay disappears halfway | The overlay clip is shorter than the main video. Drag its end or add the clip again. |
| Overlay is hidden behind the main video | On desktop, move it to a track above the main track; on mobile, overlays always sit above. |
| Black box around the effect | Set Blend to Screen for effects filmed on black. |
