Convert MP4 to MOV
Short answer
Drop your MP4 file into the converter below and download the MOV file. It runs in your browser with FFmpeg, for files up to 100 MB; nothing is uploaded. The video and audio streams are copied into the MOV container without re-encoding, so quality and file size stay the same. If a stream cannot go into MOV (PCM audio cannot go into MP4, for example), the converter re-encodes to H.264 video and AAC audio in a QuickTime MOV instead.
Maximum file size: 100 MB. The first conversion loads a ~30 MB converter engine, once per visit. Nothing is uploaded - conversion runs on your device.
Streams are copied into the new container; re-encoded only if a codec does not fit. · Remux (container swap) · Browser-side via FFmpeg WASM - nothing uploaded.
Key takeaways
- The streams are copied into a QuickTime (MOV) container; nothing is re-encoded.
- Measured: identical video and audio stream hashes, and the size changed from 9,181,123 to 9,181,343 bytes (+220).
- Most platforms document MP4 as the safe format; MOV is listed by TikTok's API and LinkedIn, and by Pinterest's apps but not its web uploader.
- Convert to MOV only when a tool or workflow asks for it.
Measured: what the swap does
Measured on a 10 second, 1920 × 1080, 30 fps excerpt of Big Buck Bunny (animated film, not camera footage; (c) Blender Foundation, CC BY 3.0) as H.264 plus stereo AAC 192 kbps, using the same ffmpeg arguments this converter passes to its WebAssembly build, run with ffmpeg 6.1.1. Results describe this file, not every file.

MP4 vs MOV
| MP4 | MOV | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | MPEG-4 Part 14 | QuickTime File Format (Apple) |
| What is inside | H.264 or H.265 video with AAC audio | H.264, HEVC or ProRes video with AAC or PCM audio |
| Compression | Depends on the codec inside | Depends on the codec inside |
| Best for | Uploading anywhere: the format social platforms document first | iPhone recordings and Final Cut Pro projects |
What you get
The same streams in an MOV file. When a stream cannot be copied, the converter writes H.264 video and AAC audio in a QuickTime MOV.
Where you can upload MOV
| Platform | MOV | What the platform documents |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok | Accepted | Yes - TikTok documents MOV uploads through its Content Posting API. |
| Instagram Reels | Accepted | Yes - Instagram accepts MOV as well as MP4 for Reels. |
| Instagram Feed | Accepted | Yes - Instagram accepts MOV as well as MP4 for feed videos. |
| YouTube Shorts | Accepted | Yes - YouTube (and Shorts) accepts MOV uploads directly. |
| X (Twitter) | Partly | Yes in X Media Studio - MOV support in other X upload surfaces is not established here. |
| Facebook Reels | Unclear | Current MOV support for Facebook video uploads has not been reverified. |
| Partly | Partially - MOV works from the Pinterest app, but not on the web uploader. | |
| Accepted | Yes - LinkedIn documents MOV for organic video on desktop, iOS and Android. | |
| Snapchat | Unclear | MOV support for Spotlight is not established by the linked Snapchat help page. |
| Threads | Unclear | Current MOV upload support on Threads has not been reverified. |
When you actually need MOV
Uploading rarely requires it: YouTube recommends MP4, TikTok's API lists MP4 as recommended with MOV also accepted, and Pinterest's web uploader lists MP4 and M4V only. The cases left are tools and workflows that ask for a QuickTime file. If that is you, a remux keeps the picture exactly as it was.
| Platform | MOV in its documentation |
|---|---|
| TikTok (Content Posting API) | Listed, MP4 recommended |
| Listed among supported file types | |
| Pinterest apps | Listed (MP4, MOV, M4V) |
| Pinterest web | Not listed (MP4, M4V) |
| YouTube | Recommends MP4 |
Terminal version and check
ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -map 0:v? -map 0:a? -c copy -movflags +faststart out.movffprobe -hide_banner out.movshould show the same codecs as the MP4.
Verify a remux yourself: ffmpeg -v error -i in.mov -map 0:v:0 -c copy -f md5 - and the same for the output print the same hash when the video stream was copied unchanged.
Questions people ask
Is this MP4 to MOV converter free and private?
Yes. It is free, needs no account and runs entirely in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
Will converting MP4 to MOV reduce quality?
Not when the streams fit MOV: they are copied unchanged. Only if a stream has to be re-encoded is there a small, usually invisible loss.
Is there a file size limit?
Files up to 100 MB. The first conversion downloads a converter engine of about 30 MB once per visit; larger files are better handled by a desktop app such as HandBrake or FFmpeg.
Does MP4 to MOV change quality?
No. The streams are copied; our test showed identical stream hashes.
Will a MOV be bigger than the MP4?
Barely: 220 bytes bigger in our test, because only the wrapper changes.
Do I need MOV for uploading?
Usually not. Check the platform's documentation: TikTok's API and LinkedIn list MOV, Pinterest's web uploader does not.
Can I convert H.265 MP4 to MOV?
A copy keeps whatever codec is inside. Whether the destination accepts it depends on its list.
