How this list is built

Sans serif in the Google Fonts metadata, and Google tags its shape humanist, grotesque, neo grotesque or geometric with a score of 60 or more.
Has a regular weight and a weight of 800 or heavier, read from the files, for the bold caption look.
The lowercase x is at least half the font size (x-height 0.5 or more), measured with fontkit from the font file.
Small caps (SC) and monospaced (Mono) families are left out: captions need lowercase letters and normal letter widths.
Order: Largest measured x-height first. This is not a popularity ranking; Koldflux has no usage data for these families.
Tag scores come from the Google Fonts tag data at the revision of this library; letter coverage and x-height are read from the font files. Nothing is added or removed by hand.

In this collection

74 families; 41 have more than one style and 74 are variable (one file covers a range of weights).
74 have a weight of 800 or heavier; 41 include italics.
Median x-height 0.524 of the font size, against 0.500 for the whole library.
Licenses: SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Using these fonts

A larger x-height makes lowercase captions look bigger at the same font size, which helps on a phone held at arm's length.
Keep captions out of the bottom of a vertical video, where the app draws the post caption and buttons. The add-captions tool places them above the bottom 35%.
Use the heaviest weight with a dark outline or a box behind the text; white letters with a black outline measure 21:1 contrast.

Open any family to see every glyph it draws, try its weights and download the files with the license.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best font for video captions?

A plain sans serif with a large x-height and a heavy weight. The list is ordered by measured x-height, so the families at the top have the biggest lowercase letters for their size. Inter, which the Koldflux caption tools use, measures 0.546.

How is the x-height measured?

From each family's regular font file with fontkit: the x-height in the OS/2 table, or the top of the drawn letter x when the table leaves it empty, divided by the units per em.

Can I use these fonts commercially?

Yes. Every family here is under the SIL Open Font License or the Apache License 2.0, which allow use in videos, thumbnails, logos, print and products, paid or free. What they do not allow is selling the font files on their own. The license file downloads with each family.
