How this list is built
- Google Fonts tags the family Blackletter with a score of 40 or more, or Formal script with a score of 60 or more (out of 100).
- Order: Strongest blackletter or formal script score first, then by name. This is not a popularity ranking; Koldflux has no usage data for these families.
- Tag scores come from the Google Fonts tag data at the revision of this library; letter coverage and x-height are read from the font files. Nothing is added or removed by hand.
In this collection
- 77 families; 13 have more than one style and 7 are variable (one file covers a range of weights).
- 5 have a weight of 800 or heavier; 5 include italics.
- Licenses: SIL Open Font License 1.1.
Using these fonts
- Show your artist the exact family and weight, and a print of your words at the real size: hairline strokes are the part an artist may thicken.
- Blackletter capitals are hard to read in a row; set a name in mixed case, or keep capitals to one initial.
- Check every letter of your text in the preview. Script families often change letter shapes in pairs, and some have no accented letters.
Open any family to see every glyph it draws, try its weights and download the files with the license.
Frequently asked questions
What are the most common tattoo font styles?
Blackletter, also called old English or gothic, and formal script, the joined, sloped lettering of invitations. This page lists the library families Google Fonts tags with either style.
Can I use these fonts commercially?
Yes. Every family here is under the SIL Open Font License or the Apache License 2.0, which allow use in videos, thumbnails, logos, print and products, paid or free. What they do not allow is selling the font files on their own. The license file downloads with each family.
Can I get a tattoo in a free font?
These families are open-licensed, so a tattoo artist can draw your words from them. The artist usually redraws the letters by hand, so the final tattoo may differ slightly from the file.
