How this list is built
- Google Fonts tags the family Blackletter or Medieval with a score of 60 or more out of 100.
- Display or handwriting category, so text faces with a medieval tag are left out.
- Order: Strongest blackletter or medieval score first, then by name. This is not a popularity ranking; Koldflux has no usage data for these families.
- Tag scores come from the Google Fonts tag data at the revision of this library; letter coverage and x-height are read from the font files. Nothing is added or removed by hand.
In this collection
- 23 families; 2 have more than one style and 1 are variable (one file covers a range of weights).
- 1 have a weight of 800 or heavier; 1 include italics.
- Licenses: SIL Open Font License 1.1.
Using these fonts
- Blackletter reads well in mixed case and poorly in all capitals; keep capitals for a single initial.
- Fraktur and Textura are the dense, angular styles; uncial is the rounder early medieval hand. Use the preview to pick the one that fits.
- Give blackletter more size than a plain face: the closed counters fill in at small sizes and on video.
Open any family to see every glyph it draws, try its weights and download the files with the license.
Frequently asked questions
Is gothic font the same as old English?
In everyday use, yes: both names mean blackletter, the lettering of medieval European manuscripts and early printing. Typographers also call some sans serifs gothic, so this page sticks to blackletter and medieval styles.
Can I use these fonts commercially?
Yes. Every family here is under the SIL Open Font License or the Apache License 2.0, which allow use in videos, thumbnails, logos, print and products, paid or free. What they do not allow is selling the font files on their own. The license file downloads with each family.
How is this list chosen?
Every display or handwriting family in the library that Google Fonts tags Blackletter or Medieval with a score of 60 or more. No family is added by hand.
