YouTube Partner Program: what you accept, how you get paid, how you stay in

Short answer
The YouTube Partner Program (YPP) is the contract that lets a channel share in YouTube revenue and use fan funding and Shopping. You join by accepting base terms and linking an AdSense for YouTube account, then accept a module for each earning feature. Money reaches you only after you pass tax, verification and payment thresholds, and the payment threshold is $100 in US dollars.
Key takeaways
- Joining YPP is a set of terms, not a badge: base terms first, then one module per feature (Watch Page ads, Shorts, Commerce Product Module for fan funding and Shopping).
- Being accepted and being paid are separate steps. YouTube Help lists five revenue thresholds: tax info, verification, payment method selection, payment and cancelation.
- In US dollars the payment threshold is $100. YouTube adds finalized earnings to your balance between the 7th and 12th of the next month and pays by the 21st or 26th if you are over the threshold with no holds.
- Every YPP creator must submit tax info. YouTube says that without it, Google may have to deduct up to 24% of your total worldwide earnings.
- Falling below the entry numbers does not remove you. Inactivity can: monetization may be turned off after 6 months with no upload or post. Updated terms must be accepted by January 31, 2027.
- If YPP is suspended, the appeal window is 21 days (7 days when you get a scheduled-suspension notice), YouTube answers within 14 days, and you can re-apply 90 days after a rejected appeal.
What is the YouTube Partner Program, and what does joining give you?
YouTube describes YPP as giving creators "greater access to YouTube resources and monetization features, and access to our Creator Support teams", plus revenue sharing from ads served on your content. In practice YPP is an agreement between your channel and YouTube. It is not automatic when you hit a number: YouTube reviews the channel as a whole before accepting it.
This page covers what happens after you qualify: the terms, the payout steps and keeping your status. For the subscriber, watch-hour and Shorts-view numbers that make you eligible, use our YouTube monetization requirements guide, which has a checker. For what each income stream pays, see how to make money on YouTube.
| Feature | Where you accept it | Entry tier (YouTube Help) |
|---|---|---|
| Watch Page ads and YouTube Premium revenue | Watch Page Monetization Module | 1,000 subscribers tier |
| Shorts Feed ads (Creator Pool) | Shorts Monetization Module | 1,000 subscribers tier |
| Channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, Jewels | Commerce Product Module | 500 subscribers tier |
| YouTube Shopping | Commerce Product Module | 500 subscribers tier |
| Access to Creator Support teams | Included with YPP membership | Not stated by tier |
Source: YouTube Help, YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility, and Choose how you want to monetize, both read October 25, 2026. Which feature sits in which tier is the same split our requirements guide shows; exact thresholds are there.
What do you agree to when you join?
Three layers of terms apply, and YouTube Help says compliance with the channel monetization policies "is required when you accept a partner agreement with YouTube".
- Base terms: you review and accept them when you press Apply now in YouTube Studio under Earn. They come with the YouTube channel monetization policies, which include the Community Guidelines, copyright rules and AdSense program policies.
- Module terms: to turn on a feature you accept its module in YouTube Studio. YouTube Help says you must "review and accept the relevant module terms" for Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads, memberships and Supers.
- AdSense terms: payments run through AdSense for YouTube, so you also accept its Terms and Conditions. Only one AdSense or AdSense for YouTube account per payee name is allowed.
Deadline to know: YouTube says YPP updates start February 1, 2027, and to keep fully monetizing you must review and accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027. Creators who enabled fan funding before 2023 may still be on the older Commerce Product Addendum and must accept the current Commerce Product Module by that date, or they stop earning from those features on February 1, 2027 until they accept. Eligibility thresholds and revenue share for fan funding do not change.
The same update expands Premium Lite to every country with Premium. YouTube says creators share a pool of 60% of net Premium Lite subscription revenue and a pool of 30% for Premium views. The full list of what changes is in our requirements guide.
How do you join once you qualify?
YouTube Help gives these steps for a computer (the mobile steps follow the same Earn path). Read October 25, 2026.
- Sign in to YouTube, click your profile picture, then YouTube Studio.
- In the left menu, click Earn.
- Select Apply now.
- Click Start to review and accept the base terms.
- Click Start to set up an AdSense for YouTube account, or link an existing active one. Create a new account only from YouTube Studio.
- When the Get reviewed step shows In progress, YouTube has your application.
YouTube says automated systems and human reviewers look at the channel as a whole, and a decision comes "typically in about 1 month". If you want an email when you become eligible, choose Get notified in Earn. Rejection reasons and fixes are covered in our requirements guide.
When do you actually get paid after joining YPP?
Not at acceptance. YouTube Help lists five revenue milestones, and you have to act at each one before money is paid. Tax info is required from every YPP creator at the start; the others trigger as your balance grows.
What does the verification step involve?
When earnings pass the address verification threshold, YouTube mails a PIN to your physical address and you enter it in your AdSense for YouTube account. In some locations YouTube also verifies identity with your name, address or date of birth, and you are typically asked for the address PIN only after identity is verified. YouTube Help says that if identity or PIN is not verified, your channel cannot monetize.
What happens to your tax info?
YouTube says Google is required to collect tax info from creators in YPP and withholds U.S. taxes on earnings from viewers in the U.S. if deductions apply. If you do not share tax info, Google "may be required to deduct up to 24% of your total earnings worldwide". YouTube tells creators they may owe tax in their country and to ask their local tax authority. This page is not tax or legal advice.
| Reporting currency | Verify identity and address | Choose payment method | Payment | Final payment when closing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| US dollar (USD) | $10 | $10 | $100 | $10 |
| Euro (EUR) | $10 equivalent | €10 | €70 | €10 |
| British pound (GBP) | $10 equivalent | £10 | £60 | £10 |
| Canadian dollar (CAD) | $10 equivalent | C$10 | C$100 | C$10 |
Source: YouTube Help, Meet YouTube's revenue thresholds for payment, read October 25, 2026. The page lists many more currencies, and the threshold that applies is the reporting currency in your AdSense for YouTube account. The tax info threshold shows $0 in USD and CAD, and YouTube states every YPP creator must submit tax info no matter where they live.
Timing, from YouTube Help (AdSense for YouTube, read October 25, 2026): finalized earnings for a month are added to your balance between the 7th and 12th of the following month. If the balance meets the payment threshold and there are no holds, you should be paid by the 21st or 26th.
What does the payout timeline look like on a worked example?
YouTube's own example: if the YouTube payment threshold is $100 and you reached it in June, payment is issued by July 26, if not earlier. Here is the same rule applied to a made-up balance in US dollars so you can see the carry-over. The earnings figures are our illustration, not data.
| Month earned | Finalized earnings | Balance once added | Paid? |
|---|---|---|---|
| March | $40 | $40 | No: under $100 |
| April | $35 | $75 | No: under $100 |
| May | $45 | $120 | Threshold reached in June; payment by July 26 or earlier, if no holds and tax, PIN and payment method are done |
| June | $20 | $20 | No: after payment the balance restarts and waits for the next $100 |
Our illustration of YouTube's stated rules: earnings for a month are finalized and added to the balance between the 7th and 12th of the following month, so the May earnings reach $120 in June, and YouTube's own example puts payment by July 26 for a threshold reached in June. YouTube Help does not say how long a missing PIN or tax form delays a first payment, so that is not confirmed.

How do you stay in the YouTube Partner Program?
YouTube Help says it will not automatically remove monetization if your channel drops below the entry threshold. It does reserve the right to remove monetization from inactive channels: "we may turn off monetization on channels that haven't uploaded a video or posted to the Posts tab for 6 months or more".
From February 1, 2027 YouTube defines an active channel as one with 1,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days, or 1 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, or 2 long-form videos or 5 Shorts uploaded every 90 days. A channel that falls below gets a 90-day window to reach 1,000 watch hours or 1 million Shorts views. Our suggestion: schedule one upload per month so inactivity never becomes a question. YouTube does not say a monthly upload is required.
Staying in also means staying compliant. Severe violations of the channel monetization policies may permanently disable monetization on any of your accounts, and Community Guidelines strikes, copyright strikes and visuals matching third-party content can contribute to suspension on all related accounts, per YouTube Help.
What if YPP is suspended or scheduled for suspension?
The timing depends on whether YouTube warned you first. All figures are from YouTube Help, Appeal a YouTube Partner Program suspension or application rejection, read October 25, 2026. The deadline is also shown in YouTube Studio next to the Start appeal button.
| Situation | Appeal deadline | YouTube answers | If you win | If you lose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scheduled suspension notice | Within 7 days before the date; the suspension pauses while reviewed | Within 14 days | You stay in YPP | Suspended; no second appeal; re-apply 90 days after |
| Already suspended, no appeal made earlier | Within 21 days of suspension | Within 14 days | Re-admitted within 30 days | Re-apply 90 days after suspension |
Appeals are judged on the channel in its current state, so YouTube says not to delete videos before you submit. A video appeal must be video only, under 5 minutes, unlisted, newly uploaded to the channel, narrated in a supported language, and show the channel URL in the first 30 seconds. YouTube Help lists the supported languages and what to show.
If YouTube later offers a path back after Community Guidelines or copyright problems, its page says monetization may be reinstated after 3 months with no new issues. Paused monetization is different from disabled: it means you need to link an active, approved AdSense for YouTube account to resume.
Can you leave the YouTube Partner Program?
Not confirmed. We read the YPP overview, the approved-to-monetize FAQ and the monetization-disabled page and found no step that says how to opt out of the program. YouTube Help does document closing your AdSense for YouTube account: if the balance is above the cancelation threshold ($10 in US dollars) you get a final payment about 90 days after the end of the month, provided there are no holds and you completed the payment steps first. Closing AdSense is not the same as leaving YPP, so ask Creator Support before you do it.
What if you do not qualify yet, or the program does not fit you?
The lower tier (500 subscribers) opens memberships, Super Chat and Shopping before the ad tier. If you will not reach either, income that does not depend on YPP exists, such as sponsorships and your own products, covered with dated rules in our how to make money on YouTube guide. YPP also does not fit channels whose main content is reused clips with no added commentary, because the reused content policy is judged separately from the numbers.

Limits and how we checked
We opened each YouTube Help page listed in Sources in headless Chromium on October 25, 2026 and copied thresholds and windows only from that text. The log is in the shipped test file. Currency tables list four currencies of the many YouTube publishes. We did not apply to YPP ourselves: the join steps are from YouTube Help, not a recording of our own channel. The balance example is our illustration of the stated rules, not real earnings. YouTube Help pages change, and the February 2027 terms are announced but not yet in force on the date we checked.
Not confirmed by YouTube: how to leave YPP, how long a missing tax form or PIN delays a first payment, and whether the Shorts and long-form routes can be added together. We do not quote third-party sites for any rule on this page.

Questions people ask
Is the YouTube Partner Program free to join?
YouTube Help lists no fee. You need to meet its eligibility rules, accept the terms in YouTube Studio and link an AdSense for YouTube account, then wait for review, typically about 1 month.
How much do you need in your account before YouTube pays?
In US dollars the payment threshold is $100, with $10 to verify and $10 to choose a payment method. Other currencies have their own thresholds, for example 70 euros or 60 pounds, per YouTube Help read October 25, 2026.
Do you have to submit tax information to be paid?
Yes. YouTube says every creator in YPP must submit tax info, and without it Google may be required to deduct up to 24% of your total worldwide earnings. This is not tax advice; ask your local tax authority about what you owe.
Does YPP end if my subscribers or watch hours drop?
YouTube says it will not automatically remove monetization if you drop below the threshold. It may turn off monetization on channels with no upload or post for 6 months or more.
How long do you have to appeal a YPP suspension?
Within 21 days of suspension, or within 7 days if YouTube sent a scheduled-suspension notice. YouTube answers within 14 days, and a won appeal restores YPP within 30 days.
What happens if I do not accept the new YPP terms by January 31, 2027?
YouTube says you must accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by that date to continue fully monetizing. For fan funding, not accepting the Commerce Product Module means you stop earning from those features from February 1, 2027 until you accept.
