How to monetize Instagram: every official program and what it requires

Updated Rules read October 20, 2026Sources: Instagram creator pages and Help CenterNo earnings claims

Short answer

Instagram has no single monetization switch. You earn through separate programs, each with its own rules: Gifts on Reels from 500 followers, Subscriptions from 10K followers, Badges in Live from 10K followers (US), invite-only Bonuses, and brand deals through Creator Marketplace from 1,000 followers. Most programs need a professional account, age 18 or older and compliance with Instagram's monetization policies, and most are limited to listed countries. Your Professional Dashboard shows which ones are open to you.

Key takeaways

  • Gifts need 500+ followers and a payout account; Instagram states creators receive $0.01 per Star and payouts start at a $25 balance.
  • Subscriptions and Badges in Live both start at 10K followers. Badges are open in the US and invite-only in 10 other countries.
  • Bonuses are an invite-only, limited-time test. Meeting the view minimum does not guarantee an invite.
  • Partnership ads are paid by the brand outside Instagram: the Help Center says Meta does not support payments made through Instagram or Facebook. Instagram's pages do not state how Creator Marketplace deals are paid.
  • Not confirmed on Instagram's own pages: ad revenue share on Reels and any on-platform affiliate commission. We list neither as an option.
  • This guide states no earnings. Instagram publishes no average payout and we do not invent one.

What are the ways to make money on Instagram?

Instagram groups its earning options into three families: money from your audience (Subscriptions, Gifts, Badges), money from brands (Creator Marketplace, paid partnerships, partnership ads) and money from Instagram itself (Bonuses). The table shows who qualifies for each, as stated on Instagram's creator pages on October 20, 2026.

Country counts are our own count of the two lists Instagram publishes. This guide describes Instagram's published program rules; it is not financial, tax or legal advice. Every program also requires you to follow the Partner Monetization Policies, and several name the Content Monetization Policies as well.

What do you need before you can monetize Instagram?

Four conditions come up on every program page. Check them before chasing any follower number.

  • A professional account (Creator or Business). Personal accounts cannot join. Switching also unlocks the Professional Dashboard.
  • Age 18 or older.
  • Residence in a listed country for that program. Lists differ per program, so one country can qualify for Gifts and not for Badges.
  • Compliance with Instagram's Partner Monetization Policies and, for several programs, the Content Monetization Policies, plus the Community Guidelines.
  • A payout account set up in the app. Without it Instagram may let you see gifts but not receive earnings from them.

To see which programs your account has, open your profile, tap Professional Dashboard and look at the monetization section. Instagram says eligibility is checked there.

How do Instagram Gifts work and who qualifies?

Gifts let fans buy Stars and send virtual gifts on your Reels. Instagram lists these requirements: a professional account, age 18 or older, residence in an eligible country, compliance with the partner monetization policies and 500 or more followers.

Eligible countries Instagram lists: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the UK and the US.

How do Instagram Subscriptions work?

Subscribers pay a monthly fee, at a price you set, for exclusive content marked with a purple ring and a subscriber badge next to their name. Instagram requires age 18 or older, residence in an eligible country, 10K followers and compliance with the Partner Monetization Policies and Content Monetization Policies.

Instagram lists 46 eligible countries: the US, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, the UK, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Korea, Luxembourg, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Thailand, Turkey, Latvia, Lithuania, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and Taiwan.

What you can offer, per Instagram: subscriber Lives and Stories, exclusive posts and Reels, a Subscriber Home on a crown tab of your profile, chats with up to 30 subscribers, and two promotions (50% off for your next 5 subscribers, and a free month offered when someone tries to cancel). One wording to note: the page says Subscriptions are available to creators who meet the list, and also refers to being invited, so your dashboard is the final check. Instagram's page does not state its revenue split or fees; not confirmed.

Are Instagram Badges still offered?

Yes. Badges in Live let viewers buy hearts next to their name while you are live. Instagram says badges are available to all eligible creators in the US who comply with its Partner Monetization Policies and Community Standards, are 18 or older and have 10K+ followers.

In the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Japan, Australia, Turkey, Brazil and Mexico access is currently invite-only; you check your invite under Settings > Creator > Badges. Viewers can buy badges in $0.99, $1.99 and $4.99 increments. US direct deposit needs an SSN or EIN plus bank or PayPal details. Instagram's answers on fees and first payout timing sit behind collapsed questions that we could not read in full, so we state neither; not confirmed.

Are Instagram Bonuses available, and who gets them?

Bonuses are the narrowest program. Instagram describes them as a limited-time, invite-only test and says even creators who meet the minimums are not all selected. If you were invited you see the invitation in your Professional Dashboard.

Bonus eligibility (Instagram creator page on bonuses, read October 20, 2026)

Posts, South Africa2M views per month for 3 consecutive monthsSouth Africa

To be invited you must also be 18 or older, have a professional account, follow the monetization policies, and be located and have tax status in Japan, South Korea or the US. Instagram counts up to 150 pieces of content from the week you activate until the bonus ends, and the amount depends on bonus plays (replays excluded) or bonus post views.

Payout rule: without a payout account you can earn up to $500 per monetization tool, with a maximum of $1,500 across 3 tools. If you add no payout account within 6 months you forfeit the earnings.

How do you make money from brands on Instagram?

Brand money comes from deals you negotiate, and Instagram supplies the tools around them. For partnership ads, Instagram's Help Center says creators are paid off the platform and that Meta does not support payments made through Instagram or Facebook. It does not state how Creator Marketplace deals are paid, so agree the payment terms with the brand.

Creator Marketplace

Brands discover creators there and send project invitations with details and a rate. Requirements: age 18 or older, a public Creator or Business account with 1,000+ followers, and good standing under the Community Guidelines, Partner Monetization Policies and Branded Content Policies. It is available in all countries where Meta advertising operates, except Crimea, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria and Russia.

Paid partnership label and branded content

Anyone paid in any form, including gifted products, must tag the business partner with the Paid partnership label. Content with an affiliate link needs the label but not a tagged partner. Products restricted under Instagram's Branded Content Policies need audience restrictions and pre-authorization, per the Help Center pages listed in the sources.

Partnership ads

A brand can run your Reel, Story, static post or carousel as an ad, reaching people beyond your followers; it can appear on Instagram and Facebook. Content with licensed music cannot be run as a partnership ad. Instagram suggests asking brands for partnership ads and says extended usage rights can support asking for higher pay. The rate itself is your negotiation; Instagram states no standard fee.

Does Instagram pay for views, ads on Reels or affiliate sales?

Instagram's current earn-money page lists no per-view payment for everyone, no ad revenue share on Reels and no on-platform affiliate commission. We did not find any of these on the pages we read, so we call them not confirmed and recommend none of them as a plan. The only views-based payment Instagram lists is the invite-only Bonuses test above.

Affiliate marketing still exists outside Instagram: the Help Center says content featuring an affiliate link should carry the Paid partnership label. Instagram's own pages we read do not describe a shop or commission feature for creators, so check your Professional Dashboard for what your account shows.

How many followers do you need to monetize Instagram?

There is no single number. The lowest stated bar is 500 followers for Gifts and 1,000 for Creator Marketplace. Subscriptions and Badges ask for 10K. Bonuses are about views, not followers, and require millions. Partnership ads state no follower minimum, but brands decide who they work with.

Followers are only one gate. Country, age, policy compliance and, for Bonuses and Badges outside the US, an invite decide the rest. Track your engagement before pitching brands.
