How to add transitions in CapCut (and why they don't show)

Updated 6 steps2 min read

Short answer

Put at least two clips next to each other with no gap. On mobile, tap the small white square between them, pick a transition, set the duration slider and tap the tick; Apply to all adds it to every cut. On CapCut desktop, open the Transitions tab and drag a transition onto the cut between two clips. If you see no transition icon, you have only one clip or a gap between clips.

Transition is greyed out or too shortClips need enough frames on each side; very short clips limit the transition length.
Transition lags in the previewLower the preview quality, remove stacked effects, or export at 1080p; CapCut notes transitions often play smoothly after export.
Looking in the wrong menuTransitions are separate from Animations and Effects; use the square on the cut (mobile) or the Transitions tab (desktop).
