How to zoom in on a video in Premiere Pro (static or animated)

Updated 5 steps2 min read

Short answer

Select the clip, open Effect Controls > Motion and raise Scale (for example from 100 to 130) for a static zoom. For an animated zoom, turn on the stopwatch next to Scale at the start point, move the playhead, and set a higher Scale: Premiere creates keyframes and animates between them. Move Position or Anchor Point to zoom toward a particular spot.

  2. Set the second keyframe

Move the playhead to where the zoom ends and change Scale. Premiere adds a keyframe automatically at the current time.

  3. Smooth the motion

Right-click the keyframes and choose an ease (Ease In / Ease Out) so the zoom starts and stops gently. Expand the property to edit its Velocity graph.

Questions people ask

How do I zoom in slowly in Premiere Pro?

Keyframe Motion > Scale: one keyframe at the start, a higher value later. The further apart the keyframes, the slower the zoom.

How do I zoom in on one part of the video?

Move Position or the Anchor Point onto that area, then raise Scale.

Does zooming reduce quality?

Only past the footage's native resolution. 4K footage in a 1080p sequence can be zoomed about 2× without upscaling.
